During my time on Capitol Hill, I had a Christian mentor who would say that if persecution ever comes to America, it will begin over political issues surrounding homosexuality. And when I say persecution, I mean being locked up, beaten or even killed for proclaiming Scriptural truths in the public square. Not just being openly ridiculed or mocked among the secular masses ... though that may be precisely how persecution begins.
Which is why I'm a little unnerved by what I'm seeing from the mainstream media and Hollywood elites.

And lookit that, he was right. You're persecuting homosexuals.
No one's going to persecute you for having (ridiculous) beliefs. You will be arrested, though, if you try to hurt anyone, or start in on the hate speech. That's really about it.
Now, as for "Not just being openly ridiculed or mocked among the secular masses" - well, you're fair game. If you have ridiuculous beliefs that are easily mockable amongst the intelligent people in society, that's what's going to happen.
Do you realize that you are behaving like an overdramatic asshat?
We need the pie-chart and the Persecuted, Persecuted, Not Persecuted pics, stat!
I wish there was some way to beat these fundies over the head with them.
Are you sure you're not mixing up that quote with something else? I think this is a lot more likely:
"When fascism comes to America, it will be wrapped in the flag and carrying a cross." -Sinclair Lewis
Think of that whenever you read posts about Christian persecution.
Fundy Word Redefinition Project:
persecute, v.t. to prevent from persecuting others: The Hollywood lie-berals are persecuting me!
Last week, a couple of brothers from Ecuador were beaten because they had too much to drink at a local Mexican restaurant, and leaned on each other on the way out. They looked like a gay couple to a group of thugs with aluminum baseball bats. The thugs also didn't like that they were Hispanic. One of them is dead. We're going to a rally for Jose Sucozhanay and his surviving family this afternoon.

When men start being beaten to death for carrying Bibles, wearing Christian T-shirts, or exiting churches, we'll talk, Motte.
Until then, go fuck yourself with an immersion blender.
@GreenEyedLilo:
Wow, that's horrible.

Finally someone realizes that being mocked for stupid beliefs does not equal persecution, although this is still paranoid and insane. That last sentence about the media and Hollywood really shows where they think our political and social morals come from. Morons.
Oh, you can spout hate speech all you want. You just can't spout hate speech and:
1) incite violence on your preferred Other, and
2) pretend that your hateful speech isn't hateful speech.
"locked up, beaten or even killed for proclaiming Scriptural truths in the public square."
we all live in hope, my friend.
What do you mean "IF persecution ever comes to America"; it's been there from the beginning. First it was the Native Americans, then it was the blacks, now it's the gays who are persecuted.
Oh, you mean it's only persecution if it happens to YOU?
"Scriptural truth" has always been available as an option. If you want it you can come and get it, but it doesn't travel well. Imposing it on others ...well, that's what we call "persecution" OF THEM. Telling you to shut your cake hole is not persecution of you.
Confused?
So were we! You can find all of this, and more, on Fundies Say the Darndest Things!
