Winston turned a switch and the voice sank somewhat, though the words were still distinguishable. The instrument (the telescreen, it was called) could be dimmed, but there was no way of shutting it off completely.
@Demon Duck of Doom: Nah, it's just that the current regime hates the idea of dissent, and is preemptively working on properly indoctrinating its workforce into mindlessly repeating whatever talking points their masters see fit to feed them.
@shy : Problem: if you do that, your superior with penalize you, potentially severely. The rules are explicit on this point: disabling the propaganda broadcasts will result in punishment.
@Malingspann : The biggest difference being that the corporates can't actually see you through the screen. At least not yet, but I'm sure it's coming eventually.
