It is fascinating how so many people claim not to believe in God until they are on their death bed or they have a major crisis in their life. Did you know that before the First World War, a significant number of the European fighting men were Atheist. Atheism was quite popular especially among the "elites" in Paris and London. When down in trenches facing machine gun fire, mortar and heavy artillery shelling, and starvation, they changed their minds very quickly.
Deep down in our hearts, we know God exists. Here in the USA, we have had too easy a life to dig down into our heart and soul where God is. We are numbed by TV and computer, instant food, air conditioning and power steering.
I came to know God while watching my entire town being wiped off the map by a hurricane 3years ago. When you have experienced something like that you will understand. What I don't understand is why it bothers you so that others believe in God.

I don't think the elites of Paris and London could be found down in the trenches quite often.

Three years ago my wife and I (and our cats) sat through a hurricane down here in Florida. The eye passed almost directly above our house. Our home and roughly 85% of our belongings were destroyed as trees fell onto our home and collapsed the ceiling in various rooms, including our bedroom. My personal library, put together over a large number of years, was decimated.
Despite that I felt absolutely no urge to seek out false comfort from a fairy tale.
So, your argument is this: "There are no atheists in foxholes!"
Hurricane survivor. Still don't believe in God(Although I was hoping pretty hard that nothing bad would happen, but not to any god. We still ended up having a big hole in the roof of our utility room that still hasn't been repaired properly. Everything that was inside is now ruined from water damage, we can't use it when it's raining, I'm pretty sure there's an exposed power line somewhere in there just waiting to be discovered by me, and the rot in the roof is likely spreading to other parts of the house by now. So much for hoping, hmm?)

It does not bother me if someone believes something that has no proof to it. I don't care where they get their strength from. That's what belief is for. Make yourself believe something and it becomes real for you. It bothers me when they start saying that reality itself is wrong and their personal belief is right and should replace reality.
Wrong. It was when I looked around and saw all the random bad shit happening to innocent people that I realized there was no god, that no one is looking out for us.

I had to witness the death of my best friend 4 years ago. I was 15 years old when she got killed. 15 fucking years old.
Oddly enough, Andrew33, I did search for God again when that happened.
I wanted to believe so bad that despite what had come to pass she was safe again.
I never found the bastard. Never.

A significant amount of Europeans, fighting men and others, are still atheists. In fact, Europe is overwhelmingly secular. What's your point again?
Only because the military likes to kick atheists out, 'cause they "hurt morale."
They hurt morale because they have proven that they will use there brain, soldiers shouldn't think, they are expected to blindly follow orders, hence the conditioning and de-humanisation during boot camp. Why else do you think they are researching battlefield robots, a soldier with a working brain is a liability.
Funny but my own experiences when death became personal and very real were remarkably different. There was no god, there was just me. It wasn't a god I came to know, it was me.
Maybe I was just too busy doing my job, taking care of my men and desperately trying not to do anything stupid to bother with any imaginary deities.

Speed travel, medicine, electric power, gas heating, running water --- not one of which has been provided by your sky monster, nor even hinted at in your big, thick comic book. My old truck doesn't have power steering ... it must have been everything else.

People find god in horrific disasters all the time. Hell, we all recall that there was actually a cross left standing when the WTC fell down.
So lets get this straight, this wonderful god allowed a hurricane to destroy an entire town because the hurricane had free will?

If you associate god with mass destruction, why would you worship him? My house was destroyed and I nearly starved to death! Praise be to almighty god, who could have easily stopped it but chose to let me suffer!
