I have not yet read any other comments, here's my view. It does not matter whether you are a "mommy" or not, the billboard on I-4 is awful. Take it down. You really are forced to view it, I noticed it right away. I don't like evil, satanic, disturbed pictures, especially one that size. There is enough REAL EVIL in the world, quit playing with it.

just wtf are we talking about here?
@Professor Cold Heart:
I'm going to guess that's the billboard in question?
Yeah, that's pretty creepy.
They should probably not have that up.
In summary: "Whaaa, whaaa, scary billboard". If it was excessively violent, you might have a point. If it was excessively sexual, you might have a point. It is neither (especially the second one). You can only take your "think of the children" arguments so far in life...
I kind of agree, some kids might like it, some kids might be scared by it. Religion has nothing to do with it, it's just that Orlando is probably full of kids going to the theme parks, so maybe this isn't the best place for it.
Well that's a switch. Typically it's sex the fundies have an issue with.
Though news flash for clueless parents. Kids are naturally prone to be afraid of everything. That's why they need parents to be responsible and help them through it rather then exacerbate or manipulate that fear.
Kids can figure out what's actually dangerous and what's just fantasy if you give half a chance.
It gets even fundier. After an online debate- several think kids won't grow up with serious mental health issues lest they see this, Maria from Fort Worth, TX adds soething else to the debate with this:
"This means we can now have billboards that show the true horror of abortion. Those who don't object to the violent Bloody Mary billboards wouldn't object to violent images of aborted fetuses, right?"
@ chaosmage: I completely agree. The Passion of the Christ was far bloodier than this one billboard. I saw that movie and (holy fuck on a stick!) it was the bloodiest movie I've ever seen.
Those people need to STFU. I'll bet if there was a shot of jeebus (a la Passion of the Christ) on that billboard they wouldn't bitch about it. They'd say it was a good thing for their children to see.
Oh, Gods, my hometown! There are so many fundies in it. I'll bet that billboard's on I-4. They usually are. In which case, there are *real* scary things on it (ie, accidents). It's really not that hard to explain to kids--just say, "It's supposed to be scary, but it's just a picture and it's really nothing to be scared of." Duh? And if you know it's there, what's the problem on the next day?
@ Amanda: This is *for* a theme park. Universal Studios has Halloween Horror Nights. It's something that Orlando residents actually like, including older kids. I was in my early teens when Universal was built, but my brother's seven years younger, and he stopped being scared of the billboards quickly.
I can see how that would creep a lot of people out. Doesn't make this woman's reaction valid, but yeah, I wouldn't want to see that over the horizon when driving, and I'm rather difficult to gross-out thanks to the Internet.
And chaosmage, the *ads* for the Passion were not nearly as graphic as the film itself. Most people who went to see it in theaters did not realize ahead of time that it really did earn that R rating for violence.
Xtian, but not fundy.
My first reaction when I saw that picture? "COOL!" Of course, given that it's the type of thing that would totally freak out my little brother, I guess I can see the objections some people would have to it.
Ah, lol. That's ace. I always wanted to go to one of those Universal Studio Horror nights, but I can never afford to travel there. D Lucille, dear, it's make-up and Photoshop. Get a fucking grip, you wimp. Also, parents, it's up to you to, y'know, actually parent and explain to your kids that it's not real. Don't expect the rest of the world to bend over backwards to accommodate you. Your kids are going to see things they don't like out in the real world, get them used to it.
Moondog, they already do that. I've seen a few fundie trucks with huge pictures of abortions on the side, and the name of some pro-life institution. It's just stupid, it's like saying: "Aww, look at the cute little corpse that the evil whore murdered." I had a mind to drive around with huge pictures of Iraqi bomb victims or dead soldiers plastered on my car with the slogan: "This is a pro-life policy?", but I'm just not that morbid.
Moondog-I probably should have submitted the one you mentioned. In fact, I may do that right now.
I haven't a clue how a closeup of a ZOMGZ EVIL BLOODY MARY is anything like aborted fetuses.
Rot-You really are missing out. HHN is an absolutely fantastic event.
I don't like evil, satanic, disturbed pictures, especially one that size.
Then tell the pro-lifers to knock it off with the aborted fetus pics.
That billboard would probably scare the crap out of my oldest son. But then again, he's too scared to ride on The Wiggles merry-go-round at the mall. There was a Dr Phil episode where a kid freaked out whenever he saw Dr Phil on TV. I also heard of a 2 year old who had nightmares about broccoli. You can't protect them from everything they are going to be scared of.
It's scary, but damn lady, it's just for a THEME PARK. Grow a pair and tell your kids, "Oh it's just for a theme park, you're not obligated to go/you're too young for that yet." Give them plenty of loving attention, and ice cream if needed, so that they understand billboards are nothing to be scared of even if the subject matter itself is terrifying.
Confused?
