On Monday, Ghairat tweeted: “Folks! I give you my words as the chancellor of Kabul University: as long as real Islamic environment is not provided for all, women will not be allowed to come to universities or work. Islam first.”

Ghairat later lashed out at the New York Times for reporting this as a ban on Tuesday: “I haven’t said that we will never allow women to attend universities or go to work, I meant that until we create an Islamic environment, women will have to stay at home. We work hard to creat safe Islamic environment soon,.”

Is that the same ‘soon’ as when Christians say “Jesus is coming back soon”?

And, ‘safe’ Islamic environment? Safe for whom?

I am pretty sure that a “real Islamic environment”, or at least what the Taliban would deem such, is not actually possible in the modern world, if it ever was.

I hope these guys create alternate schools, hospitals and business for women and girls because if they don’t, I will be angry.

These guys, while prudish and brutal, seemed to have been open to a slight compromise while still retaining their strict principles, and they were sending their daughters to school in recent years. They did say they would allow women to attend school and college (at least on a limited basis) provided the facilities are segregated from the men.

Women’s schools. Women’s clinics and hospitals. Businesses for women by women. Gals need health care, and many who were unable to get outta Dodge put a lot of hours into schooling.

There needs to be some conservative but not crazy Arabic and Pashti-speaking Islamic scholars who can respectfully meet the Taliban and show them stuff in the Quran and Hadiths that supports giving gals at least some autonomy.

For one thing, women are allowed to divorce their spouse, and they can own property. If the Taliban wants gender segregation, they can still have that.

The whole point is to lessen the worst abuses.

However, if worse comes to worst and these guys lied about modifying things to accommodate women better, then measures must be taken to cut their funding and to provide a means to help women and girls to escape.

I feel like the Taliban might fall from power before they create their “safe Islamic environment”. Afghanistan is notoriously difficult to govern without the cooperation of regional and local institutions, and there are a lot of people who don’t want to be ruled by them. They may not have the manpower to force compliance even if they manage to keep their ideological divisions in check and maintain their unity. Not to mention that ruling presents an entirely different set of challenges compared to fighting, and they’re already pissing off their neighbors by arming foreign jihadis…

Why do they bother pretending? We all know everything's going to end with women being brutally punished in various ways for make-believe crimes no matter what they do.

And a lot of these guys aren’t just fanatics, they’re so set in their ways that they’ll act against their own best interests. I swear, God Himself could could appear before them to tell them “lay off or I’ll smite you” and they’ll just keep doing what they’re doing.

In other words women are barred from campus until you've put sufficient fear in them that they will be in peril and deserve their fates because an educated woman is akin to a prostitute while actual slave trading rapists like Boko Haram (who went on to terrorize rural highly conservative areas and kidnap "proper" daughters regardless) would be treated like dutiful moral guardians.

There is not a speck of righteousness in your ego-stroking sanctimony, merely naked attempts to scare the good into doing nothing and the craven to seek safety in denouncing those who know what a spine feels like.

I hope so. I do remember a bunch of articles before the Taliban fully took over again that showed a bunch of folks coming together to create a resistance movement, and Afghanistan has a history of warlords and there are some today who are against the Taliban.

I also think stuff like the Taliban only get strong when things are chaotic. Chaos is often stoked, intentionally or not, by outside meddlers (like the West). Perhaps, over time, it’ll just fizzle out due to fewer guys wanting to join.

I also read an article somewhere (can’t remember where) where the Taliban are like the scene in Superman II where General Zod and his gang, lounging about in the Oval Office with Lex Luthor after taking over the world; They are bored out of their skulls because it was way too easy. The Taliban live for fighting and blowing up stuff.

Even if Taliban have a knack for promoting stability, they probably are crap in the long run concerning actual governing.

The thing is, many Afghanis who grew up under Western occupation and the previous govt. have tasted freedom and a more dynamic, open, Progressive way of life and thinking (however vague by our standards)… AND THEY LIKE IT. They don’t want a horde of jackholes micromanaging everything they do, say, believe or wear (heck, some guys & gals prefer trimmed beards, stubble and clean-shaven male faces). They like music and don’t want jerks taking away music.

These are mostly the younger generations and the elderly who remember life before the Taliban came. The latter can be the Obi Wan to the former and since the latter are young, they are the future.

The more Progressive-minded are in mostly the cities, and the cities are where the most power and influence is. The Taliban Govt. is based in Kabul.

Not every family will go along with the Taliban’s views and will teach their daughters that they are strong and their sons not to have cooties, and they probably enjoy music in low volume in private.

One can learn a lot in a University and the alumni from non-Taliban run Kabul University are aware of the world around them, have learned about politics, pop-culture, revolutions, etc.

IT IS THESE PEOPLE WHO WILL SAVE AFGHANISTAN.

As for those outside of Afghanistan, they can find what funds the Taliban and cut off as much funding as they can.

The Taliban can’t be fought on warfare alone, other, more subtle, “soft” measures are needed. Attack the funding. Attack the reason the Taliban exists. Infiltrate the Taliban to sabotage it. Teach the young to not be like the Taliban. Anything.

Heck, in a weird way, a true “real Islamic environment” is probably too lax for the Taliban (albeit in a ‘Fair for its day’ sort of way).

Islam allows women some autonomy, the right to divorce their spouses and the right to an education and property ownership. It may be a very Conservative religion in its most orthodox form, with a strict fixation on traditional gender roles and such, but women and girls weren’t chattel and… by Medieval standards… was quite Progressive.

Also, Aisha was an outlier among Mohammed’s wives, was likely not a child and Mohammed tended to marry older women. Mohammed liked the ladies matured. Mohammed preferred older women.

Mo’s wives were also leaders in their own right (including Aisha).
