Police in Bangladesh are looking for a teacher from a Muslim religious school who allegedly placed burning hot iron rods on the legs of her students for failing to offer prayers regularly.

They say 14 girls, aged between eight and 12, received burn injuries.

The school has been temporarily closed following the incident, while the "hellish experience" of the girls has been widely reported in newspapers.

[...]

"It was the first day of the madrassa after our holidays. Our teacher got angry when she heard that we were not offering regular prayers during our vacation," said Ferdousi Akther, aged eight.

"Then she asked her servant to heat up the rod and then she pressed it on our legs. The pain was unbearable."

Pupils say that the teacher asked the students whether they knew the severity of the fire in hell.

They were allegedly told that if they did not offer prayers regularly, they would experience a similar punishment.

Should be closed permanently, like all religious schools.

Well, that'll teach 'em to not be muslims.

This is typical behavior of Third World countries, whether we like it or not. They are a lost cause, and will be just as hellish 100 years in the future as they are now, if not more so. So, if I may briefly go off-topic and make my perennial complaint, the fact that Americans are even half as religious as these people is inexcusable and proof that America has already started to become Third World. I hope that all those kids grow up to become vocal atheists.

Oogh! This chick is EVIL! At least they're hopefully doing something about it!

@fishtank

Yes, I'm afraid the teacher-from-Hell is a woman. Read it again. "Her", "she" are words used to describe this thing pretending to be a teacher.

And the burned students were all girls...nothing turns my stomach more than a self-hating woman.

We're bored with the totally off-topic America bashing. Get over it and give it a rest already.

This is why I personally believe that religion should be wiped from the face of the earth. We'll never evolve when some members of our species are intent upon torturing those who don't talk to their imaginary friends.

Tarrying. It reminds me of when that Christian teacher burned a cross on a student -- I don't think he was charged? and it took like a year to fire him.

I hope the lesson they took away from this experience is that many religious institutions are run by a**holes. They don't need to return to the madrassa, they need to go to a real school.

If there is a hell, that teacher is going to spend a lot of time there. The look on her face would be priceless.

@Joe Mama
One teacher, nor even every single person ever featured on this website, does not condemn the entire religion, and does not demonstrate that they are inherently evil. I loathe religions, both specifically and in general, and part of the reason I frequent FSTDT is for potential ammunition, but religion is not a disease, merely a symptom of human arrogance and ignorance and hatred and numerous other traits that lead to incidents such as this, with or without religion used as a justification. Secularism, education and reason are the keys for better societies, and while they may lead to an end of religion they also may not, because most religious people aren't hateful, violent bigots.

And here in its horrible clarity do we see the original purpose of religion, to control and coerce children to accept the world as it is so they can become subservient as adults to powers that do nothing but oppress them.

Human rights are a luxury, and are only prevalent in a society where basic survival needs are so completely taken care of that the members of that society can focus on alleviating suffering.

Want to end the social forces that result in crazies like this? They'll disappear on their own if there's enough prosperity.

Want to bring prosperity to every corner of the globe? They'll need the fuel, the energy, to be able to build better lives for themselves.

Which means that, ultimately, we're gonna need more and better nuclear power generation!

Yeah, that's right. You heard me. "Live simply that others may simply live" is a nonsensical pipe dream. We're gonna need to produce LOTS of energy, far more than the nations of the world are consuming in toto today, to raise these impoverished nations up to first-world levels of prosperity. You can't do that with solar power or wind. You can't do that with fossil fuels, unless you're prepared to run out of them in under a century and produce gods-awful amounts of carbon dioxide in the process. Personally, I'd bet on something like the Polywell or the Travelling-Wave Reactor.

Why are commenters here using this incident as an excuse to bash religion? This teacher is a complete bitch, but the overwhelming majority of religious people aren't, and to believe that religion should be wiped from the earth, or not practiced at all, is unfair.
