If he was so sure that atheism was illogical, he'd dismiss it with a wave of the hand. This kind of angry and violent rhetoric ("beat down") is most likely inspired by fear and a sense of powerlessness (perhaps feeling powerless to out-logic atheists?)
I almost feel bad for him when I put it like that... Still, we have to keep in mind that he likely has no qualms with treating atheists as second-class citizens.

Not really. Our notions of most of these things are much more informed by the ancient Greeks and then by the scientific revolution and the Enlightenment. In some of them the Christian worldview is absolutely an impediment.
