I highly doubt over half of the population in the US is atheist. It would probably be a much nicer place if that were true, but it's not.

(a) Not believing in the Bible doesn't make you an atheist.

(b) Not believing in your particular interpretation of the Bible doesn't make you an atheist, either.

(c) The Bible says nothing about abortion or schools (or flat-screen TVs or antibiotics, either), and Jesus was all for welfare. It sounds like you're the one who doesn't believe in the Bible. You don't follow the Bible. You make up your own opinions, then cherry-pick the Bible until you convince yourself that God agrees with you.

However, Jesus did say not to pray in public, to love everyone, to give all your possessions to the poor, and that rich people would have a very difficult time getting into heaven. It looks like a lot of conservatives don't really believe the bible.

This is simply not true. At least 40% of the country is Democrat or votes with Democrats often, similar to the number of Republicans. Only about 15% of the country is irreligious, and of that, even fewer are atheists, and even fewer than that are "strong", gnostic atheists. How the fuck do those numbers work out?
