Quote# 87690

New Jersey gay man Joao Simoes is suing his hospital after an on-staff doctor refused him his HIV medications. Dr. Susan Borga* allegedly later told his private physician what the patient had done to become infected was "against God's will."

When the hospital finally permitted Simoes to call his personal physician on the third day of his stay, he learned that the doctor had already spoken with Borga about Simoes' medication, according to the complaint. Borga allegedly responded: "You must be gay, too, if you're his doctor." "Additionally, apparently realizing that plaintiff's doctor had an accent, Dr. Borga exclaimed, 'What, do you need a translator?' to which plaintiff's doctor had again responded that Dr. Borga needed to give plaintiff his HIV medication," the complaint states. "Dr. Borga responded to plaintiff's doctor by stating, 'This is what he gets for going against God's will,' and hung up the phone on plaintiff's doctor."

The hospital also initially refused to allow the patient's sister to visit him. She was finally permitted to bring him his medications after he'd missed five doses. Missing doses of HIV medication can cause the patient to become resistant to the drugs.

HIV has been around for decades, wonder how many people this "doctor" has already killed carrying out "God's will" before this story broke.

If Mr. Simoes didn't have a family so accepting of his orientation (in this case his sister), he could very well have ended up just another statistic.

A hospital that acquiesces in this sort of thing isn't a hospital but a T-4 facility. It needs to be shut down.

You took the Hippocratic oath to do no harm Dr. Borga. I would suggest you stop being a doctor if you have chosen to stop helping people.

Edit: Forgot to put my name. 'Tis Karana.

I'll echo the other comments: how was a woman like this not culled out long ago? How is she still able to practice medicine?

@shykid:

$10,000 from the hospital? That's peanuts to them. I'd go at least $100,000 for every hour his family was declined the right to visit him. There's a reason why "punitive damages" exist - not to reward the victim, but to punish the offender. $10,000 wouldn't be enough from an institution that easily collects that from one visit.

@#1410776:

Both points you raise are good. Perhaps this can be the start of a major investigation on this "doctor?"

Anyone who knows me will tell you that I don't normally take the side of assholes, and I'm not doing so now when I point out that (most of) you have convicted this person based upon an accusation. Does McCarthyism, or the Salem Witch Trials ring any bells? Additionally, the accusation comes from one who was at the time a resident of a psychiatric ward (not statistically speaking, the most reliable of information sources). Indeed, Ms. Borja is listed as a practitioner of child and adolescent psychiatry, not a GP MD. Both Mr. Simoes and Ms. Borja will have their day in court. In this country, miserable and twisted as it has become in my lifetime, one is still innocent until proven guilty.

Should the accusation be proven, I will step gladly into the lynch mob. Since she at one time practiced child psychiatry in my home town, I shudder to think of the damage she's done should these accusations be true. I also know right where the Town Yard (Public Works) keeps their road tar, and Down pillows are easy to come by.

I have never felt so justificated as now for going over to someone and just delivering a royal beatdown.
The thing is, I am a medical helper, and I too have sworn an oath that pretty much equals the Hippocratic one.
It is sad that a med. doctor would even think about doing something like this.
Another reason it is unlikely I will ever travel to the USA. (Nothing against the American folks here, but the chance of running into douchebags of this size is too high for me over there...)

@ Adey

Actually the charges would be attempted murder, malpractice, medical neglect, and patient abandonment (I think) and Dr.Borga needs to be fried on all of them, lose her license, get fired, and never kibble in ANY town again as a Medical Doctor...EVER. What a fucking lunatic. What a cold hearted insane bitch! She deserves to be locked up in a prison cell for LIFE. Then she can have lots of time to think and "pray" about HER sins and what God will do with HER.

This woman should NOT be a physician; she has violated the most basic tenet of the Hippocratic oath - 'First, do NO harm'.

The fact that she only is willing to treat those who agree with her extremist, vile, fundy beliefs make her unworthy of holding the title of M.D. I hope the state college of Physicians & Surgeons strips her of her license.

Dr. Borg(i)a needs to have her MD yanked. What a piece of crap. Where is the "First, do no harm."

Someone like this should be put down...
But I at least hope she loses her doctors license.

"...you have convicted this person based upon an accusation. Does McCarthyism, or the Salem Witch Trials ring any bells?"

I'd say that, if true, the lack of judgment shown by this doctor is of such a serious nature that she should be prevented from conducting any medical practice, except in the case of emergency, until an investigation is completed.

Even though it hasn't yet been proven, the potential for harm is too high to take chances on it happening again.

@ Dr. Razark

Indeed, if true, agreed.

I have had some contact with mentally disturbed persons in my lifetime, and I have heard, first hand, outrageous accusations against medical institutions and personnel that the accuser believed to be true. One cannot simply blow them off because of the source, otherwise it's a license to abuse because the victim will not be believed. That said, the false accusations certainly fly from those whose liberties have been taken from them. They have power to do little else, and a serious grievance against those they see as their jailers. On the other hand, there are plenty of prejudiced people on the other side of the locked door that have seen too much and are willing to jump to conclusions.

They will both hopefully have their day in court.

While Joao Simoes being placed in the psychiatric ward does place some doubt into his claims, remember that homosexuality was once classified as a psychological disorder.

While we do have the testimony of his personal physician. It would probably require an actual recording of Dr. Borja's ravings and slurs against the doctor to nail a conviction.
Covering up malpractice is unfortunately fairly common in hospitals.

I don't think court would be necessary to block this doctor. The patient's personal physician should be able to provide enough information to clear the situation up enough to either block Dr. Borja or not.

People often ask what harm it is allowing people to hold onto their beliefs. I say bullshit. That right there is all the evidence you'll need.

Judgement like this has no place in a hospital. She is to heal anyone that walks through those doors regardless of any significant traits he may be.

The funny thing is that Christian doctors heal terrorists who have been injured in a terrorist attack. Why is AIDS so distinctive?
