Because Sweden has turned into a complete hell hole compared to the USA. Universal healthcare, free university education (provided you have the grades), 18 months of paid maternity leave, six weeks vacation a year for every worker, state funded daycare for the little ones, oh wait...

Atheism is not "moral relativism" as atheism only deals with believing in god(s) or not. One's ethics are not necessarily related to one's position on gods. However, there is a correlation between belief in the God of the Bible and intolerant a**oholism.

Shitty jobs, with shitty pay, and shitty conditions, are better than no jobs, with no pay, and no conditions. Just because you take a job flipping burgers for a while, doesn't mean you have to stop looking for a better job in the meantime.

In the US there's a severe shortage of qualified machinists, welders, and electricians. These are well paying jobs, but my generation, and the current one have been raised to believe manual labor is beneath us. Darwin forbid someone put on a blue-collar, and get their hands dirty, instead of staying at home holding out for a glamorous job as a file clerk, or customer service rep.

We went atheist yet still have a state religion, of which our head of state is the head, the majority of people still attend explicitly religious schools ([village of choice] Church of England primary school reporting in :D ), and the overwhelming majority still identifies as Christian or another religious group?

Is there another England I've not been told about?

Um, I live in the UK and over 70% of our population is Christian of some variety. What you're getting confused about is that fundementalism hasn't really flourished here but contrary to what you believe, Christianity and fundementalism are not the same thing. The vast majority of our populace are Christian, they just regard it as an intensely personal decision. When news leaked out that our PM was considering a conversion to Catholicism, we were outraged not by his choice of faith but by the media poking their nose into such a private choice.

Also, the vast majority of crime in the UK is committed by white people. We don't have as much of a divide along racial lines as you do.

@ various: The number of people voluntarily refusing to work is miniscule. The government's own figures show it to be less than 1%. The right-wing tabloids choose to hype it up because it suits their reactionary views and the government choose to exaggerate the figures because it suits their agenda of dismantling the welfare state.
