Quote# 87452

A Zimbabwean Senator, Morgan Femai, has suggested that women shave their heads, stop taking baths and dress badly to stop the spread of HIV.

According to the Zimbabwe’s Herald, Femai believes that HIV is spreading at an alarming rate because men find it difficult to resist women.

"What I propose it that the government should come up with a law that compels women to have their heads clean-shaven like what the Apostolic sects do," said Mr Femai, when speaking to a parliamentary HIV awareness workshop.

The senator also stated that female circumcision would also help in the fight against the disease.

“Women have got more moisture in their organs as compared to men so there is need to research on how to deal with that moisture because it is conducive for bacteria breeding. There should be a way to suck out that moisture,” the senator is quoted saying.

The HIV workshop was set up by Zimbabwean Parliamentarians in conjunction with the National Aids Council and some UN agencies promote Aids awareness.

Condoms stop HIV, not shaving the heads of women and banning them from bathing, or circumcision(female OR male).

But we can't give them condoms, can we? That means they'll have dirty sex!

This guys an actual statesman? This is backwards even for fundie political figures. I feel really bad for that vast, once-magnificent continent! I wish a large horde of folks would go over there & teach them stuff, sort of like a "secular missionary", teach them basic sexual knowledge, the truth about AIDS & so on.

I hope the UN & National AIDS Council read this geek the riot act...weird, superstitious, misogynistic nonsense about head-shaving & stinkiness would make THEM look bad!

Sad. My distant ancestors in the late 17th century were from Zimbabwe. I do have to ask - why is this being quoted as "fundie," though? It has nothing to do with religion or Christianity. It's a political or medical viewpoint. It's a view that is absurd, sick and misogynistic, but why mock it as "fundie" when the article doesn't even tell us what religion the man is? He could be Buddhist for all you know.

@His4Life:

Fundamentalism isn't exclusive to religion.

My 'favourite' part about misogynists is not only do they treat women like worthless idiots incapable of handling responsibility, but they treat men the exact same way. If men in your nation are so stupid they are incapable of immediately having sex with anyone they find attractive, then you have even bigger problems than an HIV epidemic.

@JB Mason
"if we could just spare a few dollars to supply all these folks with access to affordable food, clean water, and healthcare, a lot of this bullshit would go away."

It isn't just the money. What money is sent to a lot of these nations already is just stolen by the horrifically corrupt government officials, either to line their own coffers or used to buy weapons. Furthermore, religious institutions have A LOT more power in poorer nations, and indeed the biggest problem in most African nations is that the Catholic and other churches are in the most overpopulated, HIV-ridden areas telling everyone that contraception is a sin. Not to mention that whenever a nation tries to form its own functioning economy they can't compete in a global market due to the incredibly high protection policies every developed nation has in place, with organisations like the IMF and the World Bank eager to get them into even worse debt just so they can survive.

So yes, more money would help, but it isn't enough.

It would be ironic if this misogynistic asshole got HIV from his male dentist.

@ His4Life

Oh pfft, of course, "fundie" is a term reserved for people that God likes. Why would anyone want to associate that "sacred" word with some ignorant douche who wants to inflict misery on other people because of his personal beliefs?

It couldn't have anything to do with the demonization of condoms by the catholic church in Africa could it?

Here's an idea: Raise awareness among the consenting, smack down rapists both garden-variety and militant, improve sanitation and security where medical supplies are concerned, do something about the damned hellspawn known as mosquitoes, and finally you quit your job and hide in shame.

Right, shave their heads, tatter their clothes, forbid them from taking baths, and mutilate their genitals because, you know, giving out free condoms would be immoral.

HIV is a virus, dumbass. See the V in HIV? It means virus.

The government should come up with a law that keeps people as dumb as you out of it.

I'm honestly surprised that Zimbabwe hasn't imploded from the sheer amount of fail coming out of it.

Boss Robert has essentially driven that country into the ground. It's reached the point that all its neighbors have to contend with Zimbabwean refugees.

bah, start a fashion trend of any kind and men will go with it, everyone knows men are sluts

As for mutilations and moistures... how about we just cut rapist dick off. Might not help with the first attack but pretty sure there wont be any repeats.

Oh wait, wait, wait... the answer is condoms and legal protection fucking moron!

No you Muppet, the reason why HIV is spreading like the plague in Africa is because in African culture a man is more masculine the number of girlfriends he has. There is a cultural trend to not be monogamous which in turn leads to rampant cheating. Men are actively encouraged to have as many concurrent girlfriends as possible, while women realize that their man is cheating on them decide to return the favor. This is all just part of the culture, this does not even begin to address the blatant lack of education regarding sexually transmitted diseases and family planning.

Not to mention the usual women blaming that happens. Women must suffer because men cannot control themselves. Seriously if a man cannot remain in control around a naked women, they sure as hell should not be ruling a country.

People like this make me so angry.

Or perhaps the prescription of fucking virgins to cure AIDS/HIV has something to do with the epidemic??

Yes, of course it's all the women's fault and responsibility.

Don't even get me started on FGM . I wrote my thesis on it, and I still get the cold shudders all these years later thinking about it.

If the good senator wants to cut down on the sexytimes in the interest of disease control, maybe the senator should lead the way in adopting the true equivalent of female "circumcision". That would be full male castration. And let's do it right -- just like it's done to the little girls -- with a rusty knife and no pain meds.
