Quote# 87275

The Obama campaign apparently didn't look backwards into history when selecting its new campaign slogan, "Forward" — a word with a long and rich association with European Marxism.

Many Communist and radical publications and entities throughout the 19th and 20th centuries had the name "Forward!" or its foreign cognates. Wikipedia has an entire section called "Forward (generic name of socialist publications)."

"The name Forward carries a special meaning in socialist political terminology. It has been frequently used as a name for socialist, communist and other left-wing newspapers and publications," the online encyclopedia explains.

The slogan "Forward!" reflected the conviction of European Marxists and radicals that their movements reflected the march of history, which would move forward past capitalism and into socialism and communism.

Mr. Morton, I can't help but notice that you're wearing shoes..

Do you know who else liked to wear shoes? HITLER!

This is just grasping at straws. If it had been called "Onward", would these people start liking him on the grounds that anyone who uses that term must be a dominionist Christian? Hell no, because he's black. The rest of the civilized world gave up that sort of prejudice 67 years ago.

Mr Morton here must have such a hard life, having to analyse literally every single word ever spouted by those of different political beliefs and scan for hidden socialist code. I wonder if he manages to sleep.

Or, it could mean moving forward as in progress instead of stagnating by doing the same old things over and over again like conservatives want to do.

Uh..."Forward" is also the motto of Wisconsin. It has been since 1848.

It was also pointed out that "Forward" was used in a Nixon campaign as well. It's generic. It carries no deeper meaning, aside from implications that we need to move "forward" and leave petty politics behind.

Since when do Marxists have a copyright on the word forward? I'd much rather move forward with Obama than regress back to the 1950's with any of the Republicans.

@JB Mason: Not so much "regression" as "stasis". To allude to Doubting Thomas's point, they don't think it's POSSIBLE to move past unalloyed capitalism, rather that it's the most perfect and just system possible in this universe (and maybe the multiverse...? If you're L. Neil Smith, anyway.). It doesn't help that they don't believe in congenital (i.e. blameless) weakness. I still don't get why people think that strength is a virtue in and of itself. Probably how racists manage to think that skin color is a virtue in and of itself.

@ GodLovesMurderers: it was there, but has been deleted. It's not beyond the bounds of possibility that it was created solely for the purpose of supporting the article.

Communism, Marxist, Marxism, Socialism.

All words Victor very likely doesn't understand.

I'd be surprised if he knows where Europe even is.

I always knew the Army command of "Forward, march!" was Marxist and, worse, European.

There's also a loooong list of US Miltary divisions who use "Forward" or some variation with the word forward in it as their slogans, so you just slapped your beloved military in the face, Victor.

Hmmm, I looked it up and my Wiki page for the word "forward" didn't have one shred of what you claimed. Maybe my computer machine is woefully inadequate.

I think it matches the GOP's 2012 slogan of "Backwards!" pretty well.
