As a Briton I was never more than 70-something miles from the sea, so beach civil engineering figured quite a lot on my holidays.
I didn't have the benefit of the Atlantic or Pacific though. When you've got the North Sea bearing down on your little sand village it genuinely is a matter of life and cold, windy death.

It's brilliant fun. You build an elaborate sand town complete with streets, castles, pools etc. when the tide is out
Then you have to dig ditches and build walls and dams to keep the sea from destroying it when the tide comes back in. You get the most points if your town gets completely surrounded by the sea without succumbing, though it always does in the end.

Here's something basic about human psychology that this geezer doesn't seem to know; when you "squash" (repress) fantasies, desires etc, they tend to rebound with equal force, sooner or later.
What is it that could make someone react with such aggressiveness to differences in gender roles? Could it be that playing with gender roles threatens patriarchal power itself?

Utter bullshit. I have a 14-month-old son. He is the light of my life. He's a happy, easy-going, kind, generous, humorous little guy, and I treasure every minute I spend with him. The idea of trying to "modify" who he is by punishing any behavior or expression he may someday exhibit outsive of the "norm" is about the most monstrous thing I can imagine. My job is to help him discover the person inside, to become the best person he can be. To do anyting less just seems so repellent to me.
