Your God is nothing more than a recycled version of Zoroaster.

NOPE! And you don't even understand the Babel myth that you're blathering about, people weren't scattered, they were supposedly given different languages.
4/28/2012 1:57:48 PM
Then why have people in remote places never heard of God? I don't think you thought that true.

"Traced back" implies that they came after the Hebrew God. In fact, most of them pre-date that particular God.
Many cultures also have a flood myth which pre-dates the one in the Bible. You can read in the Epic of Gilgamesh, much older than the Bible, about a man called Utnapishtim who survived the great flood that the gods sent by building a boat. The Greeks had a story, also older than the Bible, about a man called Deucalion who did the same thing.
In fact, it is the Jewish God who can be "traced back" to earlier tribal deities, and perhaps shows the influence of Egyptian Atenism.

I wonder how much mental gymnastics he will do once he has been proven wrong.

Odin still owns Yahweh.
4/28/2012 4:18:33 PM
Even those ones who came before the Biblical God? That must be a real fancy time machine them bible writers had.
4/28/2012 5:10:15 PM
Sorry, but no. In reality most of the worlds' religion predate the Christian god.
4/28/2012 5:23:24 PM
@anevilmeme: You mean Ahura Mazda? Zoroaster was the prophet.
4/28/2012 6:41:42 PM
How can you explain the ancient Greek gods in Abrahamic terms? What on earth do they have in common? I suppose you could argue that Yahweh was also going around banging mortal chicks, but that kind of makes your argument even worse.

Beaten to the punch, but I'll say it anyway.
Ahura Mazda says, "You're full of shit!"
Ignorant jackass says what?

If you go back in time, you'll find Hindus worshiping their God, before the Christians.

Wow! For the first time since I started frequenting this site, the responses have been more frightening than the OP.

"The accounts are much the same and yet much different."
"It is a bit involved as I am sure you can imagine, so we will let it go at that for now."
You sound like quite an idiot, as I am sure you can imagine.

Even the ones worshipped long before the Bible was a thing.

I'm a Christian and believe anyone is entitled to their own opinions. Just because the floods were written about and the Hebrew God was written about after these vast cultures doesn't disprove its validness Architectural evidence was found in Egypt of presence of Jewish people there. The Bible isn't always meant to be interpreted literally. The such as creation. It just said it happened not exactly how God did it. For instance the days. The Bible also said 1day for God is like a thousand years for us. Why not accept that it could mean billions of years for us. Also God revealed all those things to Moses after all of it happened so of course there will be versions of it scattered in myths of the people of world. People used to think the world was flat. Just bc pol thought it was flat before it was proven to be round .. doesn't mean that it wasn't round. That's my theory. 1 day for God means wayyy more for us. Doesn't mean everything was instant. To me God took his time

I got news for you Stephen... one word... Sumerians.
They and their religious beliefs, farming, pottery, civilization, and culture were here long before the Egyptians and even longer than your Biblical God. Try again! ;3
If anything the Bible and it's God stole from Sumerian stories, beliefs, and myths which then branched out to Egyptian, Assyrian, Babylonian, Judaism, Hinduism, Roman, Greek, and all others afterwards and maybe not technically in that order but still Sumerian stuff came first.
The Sumerian lore has its roots deeper than anything else in the history of our world and thanks to archeological evidence and dating we have proof of this since we have found the treasure trove of ancient Sumerian writings.
Check out a book called "101 Myths of the Bible" and you will see how closely the story of Noah and the flood resembles the flood story of Sumeria known as the Epic of Gilgamesh.

There are no words for how wrong you are.

of course everyone is entitled to their opinion but not when it is utter bullshit and codswallop that makes not a damn bit of sense. If someone is going to talk about the Judeo-Christian God and the Bible that talks about Him then they should have their shit straight including sources, archeological scientific evidence that backs up the claims made in the Bible and a solid understanding of world history as well as the historical timeline of the Bible itself right before they blather on their "opinion" and try to make it into a FACT.
Fiction is fun but facts are way more substantial. God might have His own timeline and how things work in His ways but that still doesn't excuse Stephen from trying to claim that physical observable evidence on earth backs up the supernatural claims of the Bible because I guarantee you it mostly DOESN'T.
The Sumerian stories were here long before the Judeo-Christian stories and that is a FACT.
Most of the Bible is ancient plagiarism from other cultures beliefs and myths and that is a FACT. It has been proven time and time again by dating, archeology, and comparison of events in the stories as well as characters that are similar.
