Quote# 87022

I like bullies and think they do an important service in most cases... seriously people in the 1st world countries who run this planet have become soft, self-entitled, petty little pricks who for the most part have lost all meaningful touch with reality... adversity is a good thing as it either makes someone stronger or breaks them... and if they break than they deserve what comes with that...

all this "everyone is equal and special" coddling bullshit is sickening

Survival of the fittest??? Hardly a moral stance, it never ceases to amaze me how he could describe evolution so well yet he probably doesn't believe in it. Talk about twisting facts. how then does he expect to be believed when he interperets anything else.

as someone who has being bullied for five years starting when i was around 8 by a teacher and it on and off [a teacher always was one of the bullies] i'm nearly shaking with anger at what this person dares to say - i doubt they were ever bullied themselves as if they were they would know what it is like - the fear that everyone hates you , the constant insults , the poor self esteem
i hope he lives to regret his arrogant statement - as in he is bullied and broken and someone says something like his statement to him justifying their actions

I have to agree with this. Adversity makes people stronger, or at least it forces those who have the potential to be strong to realize that potential. I must accord a measure of honour to every antagonist I have ever faced, and every one I continue to face, because without them providing resistance I would never have developed into the superior man I am now. The desire to be free from adversity is a characteristic of the weak, strong people desire to conquer adversity.

*Edit: To qualify, this is also a profoundly un-Christian thing to say. Christianity being, essentially, an expression of the desire to be free from suffering. What else could the dichotomy of Heaven/Hell be?

Wow. Whilst I thought the Shadows had awesome ships and all, I never realised you were that much of a Mr. M orden fanboy, Liquidacid123.

I bet you got hard whenever he asked the question: 'What do you want?'.

PROTIP: The Shadows (in "Babylon5") raison d'etre is 'Evolution through Chaos & Conflict'.

"The desire to be free from adversity is a characteristic of the weak."

So, you're saying that, within the context of the above quote, anybody who wishes to free from being abused, assaulted, demeaned and harassed by the pricks and cunts of this world is weak.

Anybody who doesn't want to be discriminated against, chronically persecuted, and unfairly demonized is weak. Merely having the desire to NOT be the victim/subject of these things is weak, right? That's what you seem to be suggesting.

If I'm wrong and am misinterpreting what you're trying to convey, please tell me and offer clarification, because I dearly want to be wrong.

"...I would never have developed into the superior man I am now."

Genuinely superior people do not have to advertise. The fact that you have to speaks volumes about your alleged "superiority."

Go outside and play little boy. The grown ups are talking.

It's one of Eric Raymond's many odious traits that he grew up with cerebral palsy and yet has no desire to help people like him deal better. He generalizes from his own craptastic childhood and treats people who don't manage to deal with bullying at all well as people who deserved their own fate by being too weak to fight back, never mind that not everyone has the same mindset as him. (Or, for that matter, such a fantastically inflated ego.) I feel bad for people who think that just because their lives were shitty, that this is normal for all people. However, that doesn't excuse them from acting like, well, this guy.

You have completely missed the point.

The essential difference between bullying and a strength-building contest is consent. As an example: I thank the members of my karate dojo for trying to beat me up. But if they tried that on me outside the dojo, it would be assault and they'd be cooling off in jail for a while.

Bullies don't get permission, and aren't out to make people stronger, even if they use that as a transparently hollow excuse. It's all about making themselves feel better ("Look at me! I can reduce this kid to a quivering mass on the floor! I'm so badass!"), and helps no one.

Bullying is abusive, exploitative, and entirely unacceptable.

So, you wouldn't mind being bullied by us?. Oh yeah, here it's where the fairy tale ends.

Well, except that bullies don't provide service to anybody. Bullies are more likely to be in trouble with the law before turning 24, are more likely to be fired from their jobs because of the complaints they receive and the loss of profit they provoke, they are more likely to be perpetrators of domestic violence and to be involved in fights. Of course, you like them because you think you're not going to be their victim. Now I'm thinking, would you mind if we bully you?. Just a thought.

I like how his definition of people that should be bullied basically describes him.

I hope you do break when the people that agree with you come around to beat the shit out of you. See how much you like it then.
