I’m not advocating that God only punishes people who rape Christian women or only protects Christians.
You're right - He obviously doesn't. In fact, it's hard to see how God punishes or protects anyone.
He knows you can get through this.
If you fall down the stairs, will you be comforted if the EMTs just pat you on the back, say "I know you can get through this" and leave you at the foot of the stairs to set your own broken leg?
