No, they didn't. The definition of speciation is that the creatures involved can no longer produce fertile offspring. If they were doing that, they were different RACES (like neanderthals and modern humans), not SPECIES.

You know, I remember that it was mathematically shown to be extremely likely that, if it were possible to trace people's ancestry all the way back to the beginning of the Age of Exploration (the time that white supremacists believe was totally free of race-mixing) that all white people have ancestors from Asia and Africa as well as Europe. I know this has been said before, but someone has got to personally fund an expedition for all Stormfront members to get their DNA tested, just to see the looks on their faces at the results.

Even assuming black people were indeed a distinct and seperate species to white people (okay, yes, that is an exciting thought, but could you put your pants back on now please, CatherineGrace? Thank you.) - who the fuck cares? We both are social, sentient, intelligent creatures, with very little to differentiate them, so even under that massive massive hypothetical they deserve to be treated equally.

Um...Kulgur? I think the blue-winged and golden-winged warblers and their hybrid offspring, the Brewster's warblers, would like to correct you. Especially since Brewster's warblers CAN breed (although you usually get either primarily blue-wingeds or golden-wingeds, or occasionally Lawrence's warblers).
Although I wonder if it's just that blue-wingeds and golden-wingeds are at the very verge of how distinct two species can be before their offspring are necessarily sterile.

I consider different races to be akin to subspecies in leopards. They're all Panthera Pardus, and can interbreed, but are phenotypically different.
Plus the hominid interbreeding hypothesis, which I think is likely, means that white people are one of the branch-off subspecies through hybridization with neanderthals.

The most recent common ancestor of
all living humans lived between 5000 and 2000 years ago (
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Most_recent_common_ancestor), and we almost certainly all have (different) ancestors from Europe, Asia, and Africa much more recently than that.
It gets better: somewhere between 15000 and 5000 years ago, there is the Identical Ancestors Point (
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Identical_ancestors_point). We are all descended from the
same set of people who were alive at that point.
Still further back (~90000 YBP), there was a man who had sons who had sons who had sons, all the way down to everyone with an XY-genotype who is alive today; and a bit further back (~150000 YBP), there was a woman who had daughters who had daughters who had daughters, all the way down to every human who is alive today.

@Skyknight: Yeah, but they're birds. Bird and reptile speciation is really weird. It's possible to cross snakes of two different orders (colubrids especially) and get fertile offspring on some occasions.
With mammals, though, generally the rule that cross-species mating produces infertile hybrids or can't produce hybrids at all holds true. So I don't know what this person is yammering on about.

The rule has a lot of exceptions. Canines and felines often produce fertile offspring, as do ursids, bovines and cetaceans.
Apparently some monkey species can interbreed and produce fertile offspring.
Modern ape hybrids are rare and usually inviable, most certainly because with the exception of Chimpanzees and Bonobos, all extant great apes are the only representatives of their genus, and have no close relatives.

It does not always mean that since the Mallard and American Black Duck can produce fertile offspring, but the thing is, we're the only living species in our genus, as opposed to how those two duck species are in the massive genus Anas. Members of Homo sapiens may look different on the outside, but on the inside? Exactly the same. Face it, inside, you're the same as your bigotry targets.

A good chunk of my ethnic background is Sicilian. Thus, though I identify myself as "white", there's a huge chance that there are Medieval/Renaissance-Era Arabs & North Africans in my ancestry...perhaps some Black Sub-Saharan Africans as well.
A century ago, these "White Power" goobers would have put me, as well as the Irish (who I also have in my ancestry), in the same category as "Tha JOOOOZZ!" & "Those spooky Brown Skinned folks".
Point is, most folks are mixed to some degree!
Ethnic intermixing produces strong & varied genes!
Of course, as far as ethnibigots are concerned, science is some weird demonic plot by "Dah Jooozzz!"
