The Sacred Band of Thebes comes to mind, but even without such institutions, gays have served in the armed forces for who knows how long. In the rest of the free world, gays could be honest about who they were and not a single fuck was given. Now the gays in the armed forces of the USA have that same privilege.
Still doesn't say anything about the effectiveness of sais armed forces.

Stop getting your knickers in a twist. Breathe in the air, smell the roses and realize there's a whole lot of soldiers who are even more motivated to do what they're doing: Protecting your rights and freedom to harass them, just because they are allowed to be honest about who they love and who's waiting for them to get home.

If anything, soldiers deserve respect, not contempt. No exceptions.

Years before the repealment of DADT in the US, our Ministry of Defence was lauded the world over as being very Equal Opportunities employers in the British Army, Royal Navy & Royal Air Force, regardless of gender, beliefs (or lack of such) and lifestyle; as long as you fit the minimum age, height and educational criteria, they'll take you.

Actually the repeal of Don't Ask, Don't Tell didn't seem at all to affect regulations regarding soldiers fraternizing. It seems that homosexual involvements are just as prohibited in the military as heterosexual ones.
