This is awful. There's no doubt that there is no excuse for the pastor's statements.
That being said..
Why the hell was a baptist preacher presiding over the funeral in the first place? Whose bright idea was it to have the funeral there? Shouldn't it have been in a neutral place, or a Unitarian group?
There's time for pointing out stupidity and unreasonableness of religion and its masters, but this... This doesn't seem right to me. It was almost like they were daring the preacher to call out his shenanigans. Unless it was the darkly morbid wish of the deceased to do so, this just doesn't seem right to me.
(edit @Hazumu) Her family was _very_ unaccepting of her true gender identity, and used her funeral to proclaim their final disapproval and good-riddance
Ah, so the FAMILY chose the battle. And they *did* dare the preacher, but more towards their liking. *sigh* That's cold.

Several years ago a Black friend who happened to be gay died of diabetes. His family didn't want ANY mention of the fact that he was gay, and wasn't particularly thrilled with all his friends who showed up, even though we were nothing but respectful.
If you don't want your funeral and burial/cremation to be managed by family members who don't share your views, get a will drawn up ASAP.

Dude... you just don't do that! If you don't agree with transgendered people, then either don't preside over their funerals, or, if you must, don't speak ill of them during the service! Have you ever heard of something called due to the dead?! Mclean sounded like a liberal Christian in life, and so were many of her LGBT friends, judging from this, so that ought to shut up any claims that they are "atheistic" or "against God".
The two also said friends of Mclean became angry when clergy and others speaking at the service referred to Mclean as “he.” McCormack said many in the audience responded by shouting the word “she.”
Aw. I actually wish I could have witnessed that. It would've been quite the spectacle.
