(on Harry Potter).....

This is what concerns me. I read an article written by a former witch - she was of the opinion that things contained in the book are quite dangerous and that many of the spells and the wording contained in the books are in fact based in reality. Her statement was something along the lines of - if JK Rowling was not a witch - she was sure steeped in the traditions and knowledge of the occult enough that she certainly got all the facts right.

There's one particular thing about the fundie hysteria over Harry Potter that amuses me. Previously, fundies claimed Wicca wasn't a real religion, a la Rep. Barr's attempt to ban it from military bases. Then Rowling's books appear in school libraries and lo, fundies want to ban them because they "promote the religion of Wicca"! Yeah, nothing like consistency, and that's nothing like it. I've been a practicing NeoPagan for 25 years, and I sure wish my teachers had told me all I had to do to fix my car or knit a sweater was to wave my wand and pronounce a Latin pun. Silly me, spending so much money at the auto shop and department store!

Either you are lying for Jebus or she was.

Lying for Jebus is still lying, just saying.

Based in reality... if you can call erudite puns (chiefly from Latin) reality.

Quidquid latine dictum sit, altum videtur

I think I can speak as a voice of authority on this and tell you that this bitch is lying. My mother's a Wiccan, and I can tell you, magic is nothing like Harry Potter.

To steal a phrase from Family Guy- Are you sure it was an article? Are you sure it wasn't -nothing-?

When I see Harry Potter and "former witch" in the same sentence, my BS detector goes berserk!

Well, let me tell you, Mary Sue-wannabe, most Harry Potter spells are based on Latin words, if not from Latinized English words. I would put Harry Potter wayyyyy down at the bottom of the list of influences.

"I read an article written by a former witch..."

- Fundamentalist scare literature is rife with "former" witches, satanaists and cult high priests. The devotees of this stuff never seem to catch on that they are being had.
