Quote# 79724

Rick Santorum launched into a scathing attack on the left, charging during an appearance in South Carolina that the history of the Crusades has been corrupted by “the American left who hates Christendom.”

“The idea that the Crusades and the fight of Christendom against Islam is somehow an aggression on our part is absolutely anti-historical,” Santorum said in Spartanburg on Tuesday. “And that is what the perception is by the American left who hates Christendom.”

He added, “They hate Western civilization at the core. That's the problem.”

After asserting that Christianity had not shown any “aggression” to the Muslim world, the former Pennsylvania senator — who is considering a 2012 run for the White House — argued that American intervention in the Middle East helps promote “core American values.”

“What I'm talking about is onward American soldiers,” he said. “What we're talking about are core American values. ‘All men are created equal' — that's a Christian value, but it's an American value.”

“It's become part of our national religion, if you will,” he continued. “The point I was trying to make was that the national faith, the national ideal, is rooted in the Christian ideal — in the Judeo-Christian concept of the person.”

I can't believe that kids in school didn't start calling Santorum "Dick" when he was little.

The crusades were called by the Pope to assist the Byzantine Emperor and then turned into a vicious land grab by Norman lords such as Borhemond.

The christians slaughtered anyone of a different race or creed on their way to Jerusalem. In Worms, the jewish population were decimated by the passing "christian" soldiers.

I suspect it is Rick Santorum that needs the history lesson.

Painful to admit, but he's almost got a point.

The liberal view of the Crusades as a brutal invasion of peaceful Muslim lands kind of ignores the fact that they were conquered at sword-point by Muslims several centuries earlier. And that the same Muslims were currently crushing Byzantine Greece.

Santorum is a sexual neologism for a "frothy mixture of lube and fecal matter that is sometimes the byproduct of anal sex. Thank you google.

@Disreg: Not that much of a point. Because, uh, 'conquered several centuries before' means 'conquered by different people, who were long dead,' though the inhabitants would have defended their right to have conquered, same as some Christians defend the Crusades. And it was only some of the same Muslims. The (Seljuk Turkish) Sultanate of Rum was giving most of the trouble at the time, and they didn't hold Jerusalem. That Byzantium and France are a long way apart and isn't really as big a distinction as it could have been, but who was actually maybe going to invade Europe at some point is.

And--here is kind of the important part--it was definitely not the women and children of Jerusalem who were giving the Byzantines trouble. When you commit horrific war crimes, you get to be the bad guy. Hitler isn't incredibly evil for trying to conquer Europe, he's just an aggressive megalomaniac. He's evil because The Final Solution.

"Just like to point out that the Christian crusaders murdered far, far more innocent Jews than the Muslims ever did. Funny how he forgets this fact when talking of 'judeo-christian' values."

Well, in the crusaders defense, them Joos was dark-skinned. How could you tell them from the Ayrabs? Just kill 'em all and let gawd sort 'em out.

Actually, the constitutional idea is that everyone has worth, or isn't inherently bad.

The Biblical idea is that everyone is a worthless piece of shit by default.

Totally opposite.

"Numbers of the Saracens were beheaded...others were tortured for several days, then burned with flames. In the streets were seen piles of heads and hands and feet. One rode about everywhere amid the corpses of men and horses. In the Temple of Solomon, the horses waded in blood up to their knees, nay, up to the bridle."
-- Raymond of Aguilers, Crusader, 1099

The Crusades did a pretty good job of making themselves look bad, if you ask me.

While it might seem that Santorum's statement, that Christians value equality yet they are superior to Muslims, is hypocritical and contradictory, it's actually quite logical.

You see, Christians understand that all men are equal. However, if you aren't a Christian (and not a Mormon or Catholic or other "wrong" type of Christian), then you aren't really a human being.

So, killing civilians is "part of the American values"?. What about the siege of Jerusalem, where they killed even the indigenous Christians because they were Orthodox?, is that a signal that they "hate" Christemdom too?(and as a half Spanish woman, did you know that some Crusaders raped Christian women and killed people in Christian villages during Reconquista?)

"All men are created equal' — that's a Christian value"

No, it's fucking not. There's a huge list of people Christians are commanded to kill because God thinks they're inferior in some way.
