Quote# 79724

Rick Santorum launched into a scathing attack on the left, charging during an appearance in South Carolina that the history of the Crusades has been corrupted by “the American left who hates Christendom.”

“The idea that the Crusades and the fight of Christendom against Islam is somehow an aggression on our part is absolutely anti-historical,” Santorum said in Spartanburg on Tuesday. “And that is what the perception is by the American left who hates Christendom.”

He added, “They hate Western civilization at the core. That's the problem.”

After asserting that Christianity had not shown any “aggression” to the Muslim world, the former Pennsylvania senator — who is considering a 2012 run for the White House — argued that American intervention in the Middle East helps promote “core American values.”

“What I'm talking about is onward American soldiers,” he said. “What we're talking about are core American values. ‘All men are created equal' — that's a Christian value, but it's an American value.”

“It's become part of our national religion, if you will,” he continued. “The point I was trying to make was that the national faith, the national ideal, is rooted in the Christian ideal — in the Judeo-Christian concept of the person.”

Except - in Christianity not all people are created equal. For instance women. And Slaves. And Midianites. And...

Oh and all men are created with unalienable rights ... except if they are "enemy combatants" right?

Yeah pretty solid world view Rick -.-

After asserting that Christianity had not shown any “aggression” to the Muslim world

Report of Raymond d'Aguiliers, chronicler of the First Crusade, describes the events in Jerusalem after the city fell to the crusaders:

"It was necessary to pick one's way over the bodies of men and horses. But these were small matters compared to what happened at the Temple of Solomon, a place where religious services are ordinarily chanted. What happened there? If I tell the truth, it will exceed your powers of belief. So let it suffice to say this much, at least, that in the Temple and porch of Solomon, men rode in blood up to their knees and bridle reins. Indeed, it was a just and splendid judgment of God that this place should be filled with the blood of the unbelievers, since it had suffered so long from their blasphemies. The city was filled with corpses and blood."

Report of Fulcher of Chartres, on the same events:

"Forthwith, they joyfully rushed into the city to pursue and kill the nefarious enemies, as their comrades were already doing. Some Saracens, Arabs, and Ethiopians took refuge in the tower of David, others fled to the temples of the Lord and of Solomon. A great fight took place in the court and porch of the temples, where they were unable to escape from our gladiators. Many fled to the roof of the temple of Solomon, and were shot with arrows, so that they fell to the ground dead. In this temple almost ten thousand were killed. Indeed, if you had been there you would have seen our feet colored to our ankles with the blood of the slain. But what more shall I relate? None of them were left alive; neither women nor children were spared."

Yeah, that whole "slaughtering the defenseless people of Acre when all they wanted was to leave in peace" business was just a big misunderstanding.

You know what the Muslims hate about western civilization, Rick? The same things you do: secularism, sexual freedom, and free speech.

in the Judeo-Christian concept of the person.

The Englightenment-era model of the subject (which was influential in the U.S. split from England) developed as a reaction against both the Catholic and early Protestant models of the subject. The concept of a person with rights as a person was close to blasphemous in more conservative religious circles.

TL;DR: "We're going to war to promote peace, and we assert our superiority in order to promote equality! And this is completely unlike the Crusades... be-cause... uh...."

American intervention in the Middle East helps promote Muslim fundamentalism.

You have not read the same Bible as I have, if you think it says "All men are created equal". According to the Bible, God's special people (the Jews) can kill anyone and take anyone as slave, as long as God approves.

The Crusades happened a few years before America was founded...

Fundamentalist Muslims hate gay people, equality and sexual freedom, modern science. Basically the same things as Fundamentalist Christians hate.

National Religion? National Faith? National Ideal?

Um...no.

I say, if you want to try for a National Religion (which is expressly forbidden by the First Amendment, no matter how you try to ignore it), first you have to pick one.

So the question is...which one? Baptist? Catholic? Lutheran? Methodist? Mormon? Seventh Day Advent Hoppists? Fight among yourselves, please.

While the Crusades are certainly not as simple as "those evil Christians attacked those innocent Muslims" (in fact, the only war I can think of off hand that's anywhere near that black and white is WWII and even then the US put Japanese Americans into camps), it still wasn't exactly a shining example of morality with numerous atrocities committed by both sides.

“They hate Western civilization at the core. That's the problem.”

No they don't, you douche nozzle, they just have a different goal for Western civilization than you do. For one, they want to maintain it as a set of secular democracies rather than make it into a theocracy.

American intervention in the Middle East helps promote “core American values.”

See, YOU may believe that blowing countries up is a core American value, I don't. I think freedom and tolerance are (supposed to be) American values.

‘All men are created equal' — that's a Christian value, but it's an American value.”

Really? Then what was all that nonsense about Jews being the "chosen people"? What was all that crap about people subjugating themselves to their kings and their masters? What was all of that bullshit about people being cursed for the actions of their ancestors? That doesn't seem very fair or equal.

“It's become part of our national religion, if you will,” he continued. “The point I was trying to make was that the national faith, the national ideal, is rooted in the Christian ideal

There is no national religion you ignorant twat. Ever heard of the establishment clause?

At least he isn't going on and on about homosexuality. I guess that's an improvement?

Now now, the Crusades may have started due to the Seljuq Turks attacking Constantinople, but it would have been a perfectly ordinary medieval war had the Christians not taken advantage of that opportunity to go invade Jerusalem, even though the people in Jerusalem had not been responsible in any way for the actions of the Turks. Christians definitely deliberately escalated the conflict.

Also, we have no national region. I do not understand why fundies such as Rick "Santorum" Santorum believe that in order to accept values such as equality and freedom for all, and universal human rights, that one must also believe all the nonsense proposed by Judaism or Christianity. There is no logical reason for this. But then again, since when have fundamentalist Christians a.k.a. Christofascists a.k.a. neoconservatives a.k.a. Reaganites a.k.a. Rethuglicans a.k.a. modern-day robber barons ever given a damn about logic or reason?

"the history of the Crusades has been corrupted"

In related news, nazis accused the ACLU of anti-semetism and doctor murderers accused muslims of terrorism.

"What we're talking about are core American values."

And that's why we're waging war on conservatism.

OK - who is the American who hates Christendom?

There is a point that Islam was wearing down the Byzantine Empire, but it must not be forgotten that the Empire was terminally weakened by the Latin Christian occupation in the 1200s. So aggression is not all that simple a concept to throw around. America to has used agression, and so has Britain, France, Germany, Italy, etc. But getting an army all the way across Europe to take over lands that had been Islam's for several hundred years was not aggression? Come on!

And taking over the lands of Native Americans was not aggression? Hmmm! Amazing the hurdles that selective thinking can overcome.

Let's see: we have a scapegoat, an internal enemy, historical revisionism and religious fanaticism. I hate to Godwin the tread, but his rhetoric is pure, 100% fascist dogma. I'd suggest that the American posters watch out for this ninny, he sounds like a certified brownshirt.

“The idea that the Crusades and the fight of Christendom against Islam is somehow an aggression on our part is absolutely anti-historical,”

So I guess it's our fault for assuming that a war is a form of aggression? Oh wait, this is a Republican.

After asserting that Christianity had not shown any “aggression” to the Muslim world, the former Pennsylvania senator ... argued that American intervention in the Middle East helps promote “core American values.”

The sign of a professional politician is to be able to contradict yourself while making both statements appear to agree. Only a politician could say that our wars in the middle east are not aggression. And only a Republican thinks that fighting a war promotes "American values."

All men are created equal' — that's a Christian value

So that must mean that I'm the son of God? Why can't I perform any miracles? Do I get to commit genocide because I'm a special chosen person?

“It's become part of our national religion, if you will,”

You can shove your "national religion" up your ass.
