(responding to a poster whose fundie mom destroyed many of his possessions because they were "of teh debbil")
Would you prosecute YOUR mother when she tries to protect you from poison? You would go after your own mother just because she got between you and your sin.....

My aunt was a Christian fundie with paranoid schizophrenia, and she NEVER touched her children's possessions. And we're talking about a woman who was twice committed to a mental hospital.

Call the authorities and have this mother examined. This sounds like it could escalate into violence. Exorcism, anyone?

My mum bought me a chemistry set. I'm sure copper sulphate is poisonous. She was trying... to .... kill... me?

Yeah, I would sue my parents for destroying MY property, bought with MY money. I'd even press charges of domestic abuse, as destruction of personal property -is- abusive behavior.

It depends on what the possession was. I have confiscated "belongings" from my children before, but always with a loving and straightforward explanation of why the items were inappropriate for our household. My children also understand that once they move out and are no longer dependent on my husband and I for food, shelter, etc., they are free to purchase and own whatever items they deem appropriate. My intention is to give them a solid Biblical basis for making those choices later in life.

Luckily my mom wouldn't do that because she's sane.

I got mad when she vacuumed my room without telling me. If she ever broke my stuff, especially if for as stupid a reason as that, I would have to slap a bitch.

'Would you prosecute YOUR mother when she tries to protect you from poison?'

Of True Christians (TM) Mark 16:18 writes 'They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover.'

Show a little faith, won't you?

What's the thing with destroying swords too? Doesn't Jesus tell his disciples to buy swords in Luke 22 (when it seemed he intended fighting his way out of being arrested by the Romans).

EDIT:
I just realized, the sons don't live with their mother, she lives with them in their home that they pay for. That's difficult... you can't throw your mother out on the street but as long as she lives under your roof she follows your rules and by any definition that must include respecting your property.

PS: If Alyson Hannigan is poison, I'm drinking the Kool-Aid...

Would you prosecute YOUR mother when she tries to protect you from poison?

If her idea of what is and is not "poison" has been twisted and warped by fundamentalist cult, especially one who's beliefs I do not share.. Then fuck yes I would!

You would go after your own mother just because she got between you and your sin

You need to realize that not everyone share your notions of, or even belief in, sin in the first place. Moreover, where is it said in the bible that certain possesions are inherently sinful?

When I was about 14 or so I was wearing my favorite worn out holey T shirt, the envy of every kid playing football that day, pure class. Right in the middle of a play and right in front of all my little punk friends Mom showed up out of nowhere and ripped it to shreds off of me, because she couldn't stand the sight of it. 50 years ago.

I'll never forgive the righteous bitch for that.

@ his4life
Glad to hear it. And whilst you are talking about "belongings" and your straightfoward explainations, did you mention how jeebus instructs you (yes you) to sell all of your possessions and give it to the poor? Even if you missed that day in sunday school, when we atheist get to him, we will make sure he knows about it. Then they will realize that your intention to give them a biblical basis for choices in life are not solid.

If my mom started acting like that, I would not prosecute her; I would get her medical attention.

When the Bible said "Though shalt not steal," I'm pretty sure they may have counted destruction of property with it also.

What does your mom have against Poison?

...Well, okay, I can see her point of view here.

"Would you prosecute YOUR mother when she tries to protect you from poison?"

And would you be part of said fundie mother's defence, if such went to court, when the prosecution revealed the exact content of said 'poison'?:

Pokemon cards
"DOOM" (& similar) videogames
"Harry Potter" books/films on DVD/related merchandise
"Twilight" novels
Manga/anime DVDs, etc
Any & all rock/heavy metal albums/MP3s
Etc, etc, ad infinitum ad nauseam...

All said prosecuting lawyer would have to do is cite the 1st Amendment. After all, how can mere books/films/toys/games/music etc be 'sins'?

And you wouldn't have a single legal leg to stand on. I hear that 'divorcing' your parents is legal in many states in the US.

Not for nothing are you known as a 'Fundie', Onlyone(socio)path. Take the 'Fun' out of the equation, what is left in life?

Frankly, all it'll take is one such case to come to court, and you'll be helping Atheism in ways not even we Atheists can imagine. As it was in 1973 with Roe vs. Wade making abortion legal, then Kitzmiller vs. Dover in 2005 making the teaching of 'I.D.'/Creationism not only illegal but unconstitutional, and just this year, Prop. 8 being overturned (thus boosting the LGBT cause in the US), one such case, in which (a) right-wing fundamentalist Christian parent(s) did just that, and denying their child one of the most basic of human rights: a childhood (to be able to grow, not only physically, but psychologically - via the simple but imagination-expanding - and therefore psychologically stabilising - act of playing), would be sufficient to set the precedent - thus helping to the making of the right-wing fundie lifestyle (certainly domestic; child nurturing) illegal itself.

Go right ahead, fundies. You'll be aiding we Atheists in the destruction of everything you stand for - and we won't have to lift a finger (as has been, re. abortion, education, and persecuting gays).

Dance, our puppets, dance. Mua-ha-ha-ha-ha!111ONE1

@Troll4Life

Go right ahead. Do exactly as Oneonly(socio)path suggests. See you in court. Hopefully, then yours would be the precedent-setting case, which does as I mentioned above. And thus help we Atheists and our 'agenda' (if such an 'agenda' exists; it's only you fundies who are doing our own job for us!) Go on - contribute to the continual P.R. traincrash that is everything you right-wing fundies say, do - and think.

Surely this would just cause the child to resent the parent.

That kind of thing leaves scars. I know.

My mother threw away some comics once because my brothers left them out

Conan #1

She didn't know (or to fairly, could) what it meant, but she knew it was mine and that I loved my comics. I today have the first Conan comics #2 up to past #100 in descent shape. One of the 20's reprint the first issue but it's not the same

That being said, your mother will piss you off and you'll forgive her,,,it just may take awhile

@His4Life

In your household, with your minor children, this is probably fine (at least if you are doing it the way you say you are). The problem here is the mother is in the OP's house, not her own, and willfully destroyed personal property that did not belong to her. This is what we like to call a crime.
