OMG! In an effort to escape the stupid, my brain just leapt out of my ear! Catch it, quick!!

You never realise that distance-time are..........closely related to the time the light takes to reach her, Kenny.

"Q-If God created the world 6,000 years ago or so, why are stars millions of light years away?
A-Brendon, what a question! Yes, we know from the dates God gives us in the Bible that He did create the whole universe about 6,000 years ago. When we hear the term light-year, we need to realize it is not a measure of time but a measure of distance, telling us how far away something is. Distant stars and galaxies might be millions of light-years away, but that doesn’t mean that it took millions of years for the light to get here, it just means it is really far away!"
I heard on BBC Radio 5 last night (prior to the regular weekly 1 hour phone-in science Q&A with the 'Aussie Brainiac' Dr. Karl*, which I never miss) that the oldest galaxy had been discovered - formed just 600 million years after the Big Bang:
...you were saying, Ken? PROTIP: The expansion of the universe isn't just continuing to this day (some 13-14 billion years after said Big Bang), but is accelerating.
I love the smell of destroyed arguments in the morning. Smells like... victory.
*- Dr. Karl, whom I refer to as the 'Aussie Brainiac', and populariser of science in all it's myriad & wonderful forms):

Oh, man. I blame "Dr." Jason Lisle from AiG for thinking up the "light created en route" hypothesis. That God fellow must be tricksier than Loki, Eris, and Raven all rolled up into one!

I'm pretty sure C stands for constant, not "whatever God wants it to be".
10/21/2010 8:02:31 AM
"I'm pretty sure C stands for constant, not "whatever God wants it to be"."
'Only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity, and I'm not sure about the former.'
Ken Ham being just one of the latter. Fundie stupidity. One of the few constants in the universe.
10/21/2010 8:10:31 AM
This is what fundamentalism does to people, folks.
There are people like this in all levels of our society. They're in our schools, our government, and our military.
10/21/2010 9:05:53 AM
HAW HAW HAW HAW HAW HAW HAW HAW!!!!!!!!
(Wipes tears from eyes)
Oh, good grief, that's almost too stupid even for Kent Hovind.....
What a second, Ken Ham said that...
AH HA HA HA HA HA, HAAA HA HA HA HA......
10/21/2010 9:13:21 AM
10/21/2010 9:20:14 AM
What is this i don't even...
10/21/2010 9:25:42 AM
Ironic that the only time a fundie correctly grasps a scientific principle (that the light-year is a measure of distance) uses it to say something stupid.
10/21/2010 9:35:57 AM
Um, no, Ken, it means both. Because, see, a light-year is the distance that light travels in one year. So if a star is 25 light-years away, that means both that it is trillions of miles away from us, and that the light we see from that star tonight started off on its journey 25 years ago.
No amount of double-think will change that fact.
BTW, guys, the AiG guys generally believe and promote that the speed of light has decreased over time. Thus, even though certain stars are millions of lightyears away, it still only took their light 6,000 years to get here. Because light has gotten slower.
Naturally, there is no evidence of such a thing even being possible, much less actually happening in our universe. (How would you measure such a thing if it happened, anyway?) This is especially mind-boggling when you consider that light moves so incredibly fast that it took until the 17th century or so for people to realize it does, in fact, move.
10/21/2010 11:21:57 AM
"Light Year" means the distance traveled by light over the period of one year. So a star that is 100000 light years away, means that the light we're seeing from said star, was emitted 100000 years ago, which means the star we see is at least 100000 years old. With that known, that means the 6000 years mentioned by the Bible is false.
Then again, fundies like you don't let facts get in the way of your fantasies.
10/21/2010 11:26:45 AM
So Ken, show me the bible verse where god says "I made the earth 6000 years ago".....
What's that? There isn't one? Well whoda thunk it!
10/21/2010 12:07:43 PM
If something is a million light years away, it either took a million years for light to get here or light travels thousands of times faster than it does here. But that latter solution would change the entire structure of the universe. That's been pointed out many times.
10/21/2010 1:32:50 PM
The stupid is strong with this one.
10/21/2010 2:03:29 PM
Driving at seventy miles an hour it takes me an hour to reach London. Of course, that doesn't mean London is seventy miles away!
10/21/2010 2:11:33 PM
If you are a stupid fundie dumb enough to believe this idiot, then you deserve being ignorant.
10/21/2010 3:41:50 PM
You could get to distant stars in like, 2 days. The only reason we haven't is....
lets go with conspiracy? lol
10/21/2010 5:48:39 PM
Ken Ham, everyone! The shining beacon of creationist intellect!
10/21/2010 7:03:44 PM
Actually, the 6,000 years BS was decided upon by this French guy, who's name escapes me at the moment, a couple hundred years ago, using circumstantial evidence from the Bible, as well as a metric shitload of assumptions.
10/21/2010 7:18:37 PM
So did he just make the universe with the light from the stars most of the way here already?
10/21/2010 8:40:20 PM
10/21/2010 9:29:35 PM
It is a strong indication of the mental disorder suffered by creotards that they hang on to the words of a man who does not even grasp simple concepts like "light year". He is a liar and a crank and spectacularly stupid to boot.
10/22/2010 1:54:24 AM
Yes it is a measure of distance, but light travels at a certain speed. So can you guess how long it takes for light to travel one light year. I know its kinda hard with the Bible right in front of your eyes, but try to get there.
