In reply to "Are there any well-known atheists that have made serious contributions to humanity?"

I have seen the answers below, but the sad thing is, unlessan athiest had taught people how to fear God, then they have not contributed to humanity. For when the forces of God starts to destroy this earth and to take people of righteousness to the Kingdom then what anything else have mattered, men and women who leads others to Christ are the true contributors of humanity.

Yeah, way to miss the point of an atheist. And also, way to move the goalposts.

"Show me atheists who have helped humanity!"

*big list of names*

"No, I meant in the sense of teaching people about god, which is all that matters and which isn't something atheists are expected to do by account of being atheists!"

Ok. Give up your computer, your house, your money, your guns, your clothes, your access to food created by others, any and all government services, and language, since these are all meaningless, unhelpful creations.

The convenient moving of goalposts says a lot, I think, because it means that people like Nivek4963, who are unlikely to ever do anything that contributes to humanity at all, can claim that they are the valuable ones purely because they spout off about their favourite Bronze-Age fairy tale, something that requires neither intelligence or skill.
This is just another way for a weak and pitiful mind to justify its own existence, and lend itself an entirely unwarranted sense of importance.

When Great Cthulhu awakens, nothing else will matter, and the only ones who will have really contributed to humanity are the cultists who taught people to fear Cthulhu

But that is traditional fundie logic. Ask a question that you think nobody can answer, and when somebody DOES andswer you change the parameter's of the original question.

Unplug all those electric appliances based on the work of Thomas Edison and just sit quietly in the dark, waiting for the rapture.

Do Satanists count? They believe that the individual is a god, therefore if a Satanist teaches people about fearing other people, they would fit the description. Never said the Christian god, leading to Christ can involve fearing everyone else.

If 'twere not for one man in particular, you wouldn't have the ability to make long-distance phone calls, nor watch cable TV - or in certain cases, be able to do what you're doing right now Nivek4963.

As far back as 1945, he'd come up with the concept of devices placed in geosynchronous orbit around the Earth (12 years before the first launch into space by the USSR in 1957) which relayed radio signals to other parts of the world. Indeed, when the first such device (Telstar) was developed in 1962, who did they approach to be the project's head technical advisor, thus ensuring it's success?

Arthur C. Clarke. An Atheist.

And you owe the ability to post your fundie bullshit to another man, the father of modern computing:

Alan Turing. An Atheist.

So, there you have it. a Sci-Fi writer and a mathematician who have helped to change the world in ways that not even your Jesus (if he actually existed) could never have imagined. Or as fast.

If you think worldwide communications and the connection of computers via such aren't 'serious contributions to humanity' Nivek4963, then throw away that computer you're using, and never make a long-distance phone call or watch anything on cable TV ever again. Oh, one more thing: Turing was a homosexual too.

Your call.

I hate to break it to ya, Sparkie, but teaching people the "fear of god" does absolutely sweet-fuck-all to advance mankind in any way, shape, or form. As contributions to humanity go, I make better ones every time I take a dump.

Ah the internet, the big medium any moron can use to voice his opinion to be seen

BTW, if you're so worried about the fear of god...why not reject all medicine....since everything we know about the human body is considered a no no to the people who wrote the bible.

Fundies, first to shout about god and rules from 2k years ago, last to ever decide to give everything up to live them

There are those two words again. The ones that keep popping up even from the more moderate Christians: "Fear God".
I refuse to fear God. If God uses fear, in any amount, to keep his followers in line, then he is not benevolent and not worthy of praise nor worship, and no amount of blessing is enough to remove the taint of fear from his worship.
If you fear your God, you're doing it wrong.

For when the forces of Hank starts to destroy this town and to take people of righteousness out of town then what anything else have mattered, men and women who leads others to Hank are the true contributors of humanity.

Indeed, Power Skunk. This "fear God" message is one of the most ludicrous ideas ever to come out of religion.

"God is love, and he wants to love you, but he also wants you to be very afraid of him."

Sounds far more like an abusive spouse or parent than a benevolent deity. In fact, God sounds like a terrorist.

And yet the majority of Christians won't contribute much to humanity. Why? The majority of people in general, regardless of religion or lack thereof, won't/can't.

You've got to be fucking kidding me. You'd have to be insane to be an atheist and fear a being that you don't believe exists. In other words, no matter what people do, it's never good enough for you. And you wonder why people are turned off by fundies.

See, this is one of the beefs I have with religion, and Christianity in particular. A lot of religions try to have this transcendental view that the world doesn't matter and that the only important thing is what you're doing spiritually or whatever. This might have been nice to believe if you were a shit-farming peasant in 900 AD or something, but we live in an age of nuclear weapons now, and someone with too much power and too much could easily deem themselves the force sent by God to destroy the earth and then do so. It's dangerous thinking.

"unless an athiest had taught people how to fear God, then they have not contributed to humanity"

Oh, I kind of assumed you only meant positive contributions.

Well sure, if you're going to include all the misery, fear, torture, war, oppression, corruption, abuse, extortion, etc. then I guess any atheist will be hard pressed to compete with the religious.

Fear in God is the only useful thing someone could ever hope to contribute to humanity? Really? Even from the standpoint of Christianity, I'd say that's pretty dumb. Even if one day, the "forces of God start to destroy this earth," humans still have to live and adapt until that day, so we need new inventions and new ways of thinking till then. Otherwise, God might look at the "people of righteousness" he took with him and said, "Wow, you're a bunch of lazy suckers, ain'tcha?"

In the meanwhile, use a computer which has been developed by an atheist, without which your message would never have been known. Ironic, eh?
