Behold, the logic of RR: the only things you can do to prisoners are abuse them or decapitate them (which could also constitute abuse, depending on how you feel about that whole getting-killed thing). Because treating them according to our own rules of engagement is just out of the question.

Societies fall (as opposed to being conquered) from the inside when its fundamental values are subverted.
The principal development since the enlightenment has been the value of the individual (consider burgeoning rights, and freedoms from authoritarian interference).
Mistreatment, abuse, and torture have been outside the norms of western society for at least 6o years, this being the culmination of a cycle of liberalisation. This should define who we are.
When we resile from this stance we start to lose ourselves
