"The Bossier Parish sheriff's office is launching a program called "Operation Exodus," a policing plan for an end-of-the-world scenario involving a mostly white group of ex-police volunteers and a .50-caliber machine gun, inspired in part from the Book of Exodus in the Bible."

The mostly white ex-police volunteers I can understand, but how does the .50 cal. machine gun fit in with their plans? And I thought that Jesus would just make them fly up into the sky anyway?
*edit* After reading the article I'm quite relieved I don't live in Louisiana, especially Bossier Parish.
*ahem*
Tax money isn't being used to fund this thing, right ?
[Edit]
After reading the article, I'm not convinced that this is all that fundie.
The name "Operation Exodus" was apparently inspired by the Bible, but the purpose of the project seems secular enough--providing a reserve of security personnel in the event of a major catastrophe.
Assuming that this group is raised and funded legally, and that it answers to the relevant authorities, I'm not sure there's a big problem here.
Last time I checked, there were ZERO .50cal machine guns in the bible...
Fuck it. Nevermind, mines bigger.

From reading the article, looks like the sheriff rounded up a bunch of his good ol' boys to keep people in line during times of disaster or enemy attack. They'll probably be sittin' around drinkin' whiskey and chawin' tobaccy next to the .50 cal talkin' 'bout dem good ol' days when there wa'nt no darky in the White House.
Anyone wanna bet that Sheriff Larry Dean looks like this:

Deen said he was not creating a militia. "We run from that word," Deen said. "We're just the opposite that word."
Yes, because a militia implies discipline, scrutiny, training, accountability, duty, and loyalty to one's nation.
From the article:
"Deen said he had been formulating a plan to protect Bossier Parish's vital resources, like food and gasoline, in the event of a catastrophic event, such as war or a terrorist attack. Deen said he had been thinking of the plan since the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001."
How is this the least bit fundamentalist? The guy's a police officer; he's making a plan to keep order in case shit hits the fan. Officials are _supposed_ to plan ahead for emergencies. It's part of their job.
I think whoever nominated this for "fundie" quote, apparently based just on being called "operation exodus", seems more likely to be one of the atheist variety...
I think the way this quote was taken from the article makes it sound fundie, when it isn't, in fact, fundie. I mean, when you decide to use the phrase "end-of-the-world" and "inspired by the Book of Exodus," it sounds crazy, but its more pragmatic than that.
All things considered, the plan sounds pretty logical. Maybe a touch optimistic on their chances against hordes of desperate looters, but logical.
(From later on in the article)
...<b>volunteers will be armed</b> by the sheriff's office, using, among other things, shotguns, riot shields and batons. The members are mostly white men. Five are black. <b>Women involved will only be used in "support roles,"</b> Deen said, which indicated non-combat activity. One of their first official training sessions was Feb. 20 when <b>they learned basic hand-to-hand combat techniques.</b>
Yeah, sure, why not? Next year you can have an "Ark construction seminar, or,, Hey! Why not an "Operation Babel" where you knock down everything over 400 feet high?
I'm mean you're already crazy, go for it!
And for those who said "not Fundie"
"end-of-the-world scenario"
Not disaster or evacuation plan but "end-of-the-world scenario"
Are some of us becoming desensitized by the over use of End-Timer phrasing?
Not fundie. A bit paranoid, but it's not religious in nature.
In any case the quoted bit submitted is very misleading.

I drove across it once - Jacksonville to Los Angeles. Try getting gas with Maryland plates on your car, or asking directions to California, below the Mason/Dixon line. (Why, you-all's one-a-them thar quee-ahs, aincha ya dang hippeh. Ya know, y'all ain't perteckted 'round heah --- is ya!")

I'm glad those police officers aren't in charge of my area.
Uh huh...I've got the L.A.P.D. in mine.
Two competing scenarios in my brain.
1. Just as fishing is an excuse to sit in a boat and drink beer, this is an excuse to blow off .50 rounds at taxpayer expense - and those shells aren't cheap!
2. "Take that Pestilence! Eat lead Death!... What we have heah, is failure to communicate!"
If you read the whole story, it's not exactly fundie. A little (okay a lot) over reactive, but not really fundie.
Although I'd hate to be on the wrong street corner during a state of emergency.
Read the article. A little paranoid perhaps, but not fundie. It doesn't even seem to be racist, as the Parrish is majority white, like 90+%. As the only other skin color they counted was black, they did not mention Latino/AmerIndian (which likely makes up a significant minority) or Asian (likely not any based on the area).
Confused?
