Haiti might be a mess, but it's nothing compared to the overwhelming gaps in logic and simple coherence of Karen Smith's comment.

In a nation where your dentist is a jew, the owner of the greenecrocer's you buy is probably Indian, your taximan is a Muslim from Pakistan and your co-worker a Jamaican, Queen Elisabeth is no more than an useless symbol. And by the way, Canada was independent from England, last time I checked.

"Letter writer Tom Hurst made a valid comment regarding Canada’s Governor General and necromancy."
Necromancy? Are you fucking serious?
"Upon being sworn in, Michaelle Jean’s first action was to create her coat of arms, which bears several pagan symbols."
Coats of Arms tend to do that. Particularly when you don't have a fucking clue what a "pagan symbol" really is and you see them everywhere anyway.
"And she was quite open in explaining what the pagan symbolism meant vis-a-vis her Haitian identity."
Yes, and?
Your own Coat of Arms likely has symbolism that equates to power, virility, divine protection and so on--all conveyed using "pagan symbols" you twit.
"It is disgusting that this Governor General would not deign to honour Canada’s titular head, Queen Elizabeth, by swearing allegiance to her in representing her interests here, but instead to honour Haiti’s pagan culture."
Blood is thicker than water, as the saying goes.
"Canada was founded on Judeo-Christian laws, not voodoo."
Like you'd know. If you're anything like the ignorant pricks we have here, you don't know the first thing about your country, its founding or its laws.
"No wonder Haiti is such a mess."
It's in such a mess because the people who colonized it decided to up and leave without first explaining how to run a country to the people living there, among other things.

Atheism comes in at about 40% in Canada
Add to that Moderate (all) Christians, Jews and Islamics make up most the rest of the country.
We seperated from the crown over 20 years ago, we weren't that close for 30 before (she still visits though)
We're a very multi-cultural multi-philisophical country. While some percieve Canada as wishy-washy it's just our real belief in tolerance, equality and fairness. Another country claims those values below us

It's the Edmonton Sun, not much more needs be said. There's a reason it's the paper of choice for the barely literate in central Alberta.
Wait, I'm not being fair. The deliberately ignorant like it too.

A LETTER to a SUN paper, in ALBERTA. Surely the gold standard of sophistication.
@ True Scotsman, are you kidding? Well, I guess I'm glad to see that some foreigners have flatteringly naive view of Canada. Regrettably, we have trashy papers and ignorant buffoons to rival anything you can throw at us.

Yeah umm..... We haven't sworn allegiance to the Queen since 1980. Remember when Trudeau brought home the BNA act and made it our constitution?
Oh and if The Right Honourable Michaëlle Jean is into necromancy, well at least it's a boost to our armed services isn't it?
BTW, there's a chance that I may be moving to Edmonton. Inbetween this and Tr*y Br**ks, please tell me that I would not be moving from the frying pan and into the fire. If it turns out Crazier that Chilliwack, I may just snap.

"Canada was founded on Judeo-Christian laws"
Would you morons please quit claiming that good and reasonable laws all stem from Judeo-Christian roots. There are good and reasonable laws which pre-date your religion, and your Bible is filled with a huge quantity of ridiculous and grossly cruel laws.

On behalf of Albertans I must sincerely apologise on Karen Smith's behalf. Edmonton in the capital of Alberta and the stupidity fumes from all the politicians there must have addled her brain.
(In fairness to the Sun, the Herald is worse.... far far worse).

To Sun group of newspapers (with the exception of the Vancouver Sun) are ultra-right wing. As such they attract a large proportion of retards, like Karen Smith.
In fairness though, the letter editor did comment below the letter:
This is a pointless exercise in prejudice and histrionics.
What do you expect from people who get their "news" from Fox and the PTL Club?

Sir, decorating coats of arms with non-christian symbols is nothing new.
That's Niels Bohr's coat of arms, as you can see it is decorated with a yin-yang symbol from Taoism.

Freedom of religion, friend. It applies up here and is somewhat more valued since Canada actually wrote and signed the International Charter of Human Rights and Freedoms (which includes the freedom to not be persecuted for your beliefs).
And necromancy doesn't exist. The closest thing to it is essentially making a person severely mentally handicapped (more open to suggestion) and even that's illegal in Haiti.
As for pagan symbols on coats-of-arms, ever see one with any animal on it? Pretty well every animal ever put on them has pagan symbolism behind it.

Few notes:
1. Obviously, not all people in Alberta are as crazy as this person. A letter was published the next day basically tearing into this person.
2. Obviously, the whole "Canada was founded on Judeo-Christian laws" thing is untrue.
3. Haiti is 85% Catholic. As much as a fundie as crazy as this lady will deny it, Catholics are still Christians.

I'm sure that the Canadian Heraldic Authority, which created the Coat of Arms for her, would care to debate this issue in detail...
(Incedentally, the Queen of Canada, Elizabeth II, has to give her consent, for the coat of arms to issued/created in the first place...)
