[RE: Religion Responsible for Abuse of Women?]
I agree, Religion has been responsible for the abuse of women. Christianity however, has never been responsible for the abuse of women and it always cherishes, loves and protects women!

As long as they don't show their ankles, or let their hormones show, or try to be equals in a relationship. But after that, they're not women. They're obviously demons.
As long as she's not some slut who got pregnant out of wedlock and needs an abortion, or a lesbian, or a minority, or a pagan or anything.
"[christianity] cherishes, loves and protects women!"
Except for those women who happen to be in possession of a functioning brain.
It's official. These people live in the Bizzaro World, where Atheism is a religion, but Christianity is not. Also, Kent Hovind is the foremost expert in all things science, and Jack Chick is Protestant Pope.
Except for the thousands of wise women who the church called witches and burned at the stake or drowned.
The hundreds of thousands of indigenous women slaughtered while Christianity spread Gods word.
The Millions of women killed in holy wars in the last 2000 years
And let us not forget the Magdalene Asylums....where women were forced into virtual slave labor to make money for the church, usually doing laundry. And this lasted until 1996!!!!
Oh, I am sorry, by placing them in Magdalene Asylums against their will, you were protecting them from themselves!!! It all makes sense now.
Unless it's in the hands of fundamentalists, in which case women are second-class citizens whose only roles in life are to serve men, give birth, and shut the hell up.
This has GOT to be proof of interplanary travel, or communication. This person's stuck in a world that stopped progressing a long time ago, but their outmoded babble has crossed the boundaries of time and space and ended up here.
Have you even opened the cover of your bible? Ever heard the name Eve? Cast out of paradise, forced to suffer pain of child-birth, made subservient to all men... any of this ring a bell? It's the first damn book for fuck sake.
Yeah, right!
I seem to remember something about women should not speak up or lead, women are the property of their fathers or their husbands, it's not rape if you're married to her, women being stoned for infidelity (but seldom men), women being stoned for infideltity after rape, due to Eve being duped by Satan the Snake all women are punished.
(The fact that Adam was duped by a mere human is not HIS fault, of course. [/sarcasm])
The list goes on and on and on. We'd rather have respect than "cherishing" and "protection", thank you very much!
If you guys actually followed the teachings of Christ, this might be true. This Paulist bullshit most of you spout, though, is another thing entirely.

Chastity Belts.
Enough said.
You cherish, love, and protect women in the same way as you cherish, love, and protect your farm animals, and for the same reason.
I seem to remember reading about how women got burned at the stake or other punishments if they where even thought to be a witch (which seems that a woman could hold more power than a man it was evil), that they should be seen and not heard.
Even more recently, when the fiancee and I where in our strict Catholic high school, she was taught that women shouldn't enjoy sex or even have a sex drive in our gender segregated (almost non-existent with abstinence only) sexual education.
So no, women where and in some cases still are being oppressed and abused by religion, even in your Christianity.
Is THAT why they all look so damn HAPPY all the time? Hmm? Not repressed into an existence barely noticed by the rest of the family? Hmm?
I don't really care, most of the "Good christian women" i know are about as complete-peices-of-shit as their men are.
Yeah, except for wanting to ban abortion, birth control, sexual freedom, and keeping women at home doing the cleaning while making babies and dinner.
I can see how a guy could think this-it "cherishes, loves and protects" them by telling them they don't need to worry about silly things like "civil rights," the men have that covered! Aren't they so cute, with their own opinion! Now go back into the kitchen and bake some bread, that's a good girl...
Mudak : believe me, you don't need to be embarrassed to be thinking that. I thought the same thing, and I have the two X chromosomes!
the dog : not to mention the potential millions of PWESHUS BABEES!!1! Because men don't possess a uterus, so their "potential babies"-i.e. sperm-don't count.
Oh, really? Google this: "irish magdalene laundries" and read a couple of articles. Over 30,000 girls and women were locked away by the Catholic church behind convent walls, some for their whole lives, in virtual slavery for the unforgivable sin of giving birth out of wedlock, speaking up for themselves, or being "too pretty". Hundreds of bodies have turned up in unmarked graves on convent grounds. The last one closed in 1996, so this was not just a Victorian era atrocity, but damn near made it to the 21st century.
How many churches give full voting rights on church matters to women, ordain women clergy, and otherwise are gender neutral? Nowhere near enough. Does "women should not have authority over men" ring a bell?
Corinthians 11:8-9
For the man is not of the woman; but the woman of the man. Neither was the man created for the woman; but the woman for the man.
I Timothy 2:11-14
Let the women learn in silence with all subjection. But I suffer not a woman to teach, nor to usurp authority over the man, but to be in silence. For Adam was first formed, then Eve. And Adam was not deceived, but the woman being deceived was in the transgression.
Deuteronomy 22:28-29 NAB
If a man is caught in the act of raping a young woman who is not engaged, he must pay fifty pieces of silver to her father. Then he must marry the young woman because he violated her, and he will never be allowed to divorce her.
Real cherishing, love, and protection there.
Exodus 21:4
If his master gives him a wife and she bears him sons or daughters, the woman and her children shall belong to her master, and only the man shall go free.
Leviticus 12:2
"Say to the Israelites: 'A woman who becomes pregnant and gives birth to a son will be ceremonially unclean for seven days, just as she is unclean during her monthly period.
Leviticus 12:5
If she gives birth to a daughter, for two weeks the woman will be unclean, as during her period. Then she must wait sixty-six days to be purified from her bleeding.
Numbers 31:17
Now kill all the boys. And kill every woman who has slept with a man.
So much for "cherishes, loves, and protects women".
Confused?
