Quote# 69227

(reply to the question as to whether morality is subjective)

Atheists are in a difficult position. Without God, there can be no such thing as an absolute right or wrong. Laws then just become one person's subjective morality imposed on another person.

An atheist who is consistant with atheism has to say that there is nothing inherently wrong with raping a baby. Viewing it as wrong would only be a subjective opinion.

Given that that is the case an atheist can't say that anything anyone does is wrong.

I highly doubt that a stable society could be maintained while baby-raping is legal (though in ancient times, pedophilia was much more common, so it probably wouldn't destabilize a society all by itself). Certainly in modern times, no society would find it permissible.

Most reasonable people find it reprehensible as well (except fundies who lack a sense of morality and are only restrained by a fear of authority).

"wrong" is a subjective word, but I'm going to assume that you are referring to some sort of ordained, immutable and superuniversal rule. In this sense, you are correct; there is nothing "inherently 'wrong'" in raping a baby; the Universe doesn't care. It is "merely" an act which most societies would consider antisociety, and which most people would consider atrocious, which are pressure sthat have kept the human race alive for thousands of years.

Of course, after all we haven´t changed a single iota of our moral code..............sorry, I have landed in the mistaken dimension.

Not at all. Still, it does show me why you people hate socialism so much; you don't understand the concept of people working together for a greater cause. Laws aren't just one person's morality; they're practical guidelines for maintaining a stable and functional society. Baby rape tends to destabilize societies more than stabilize them, which is why we don't do it.

1) There has never been an absolute right or wrong thus historical shifts in philosophy and the term grey area.

2) Laws are not personally subjective. They exist to organize and stabilize, thus courts, lawyers, and enforcement. However, laws are subjective in the sense that they can be changed or overturned (shifts in philosophy).

3) Raping is wrong in a culture that regards equality as a right. Equality is desirable because it leads to stability. In parts of Africa, campaigns were started to educate males that child virgin rape could not cure disease and is harmful to stability.

4) Atheists are not necessarily nihilists.

What do you think laws are, Buddy?

They are society's morality encoded and imposed on all members of that society. They are pieces of the social contract between the individual members in order that the society may survive and thrive.

Where does your god come into it?

Hmm, makes me wonder what kind of evil shit Buddy has been up to that he's setting up his excuses for. Somehow, baby raping comes to mind.

Absolute right or wrong? Lets look at the modern take on the commonly known 10 commandments

1) "Thou shalt have no other gods before me."
Well you people claim this, but then ignore what Jesus had to say and follow your Republican leaders to slaughter like good little sheep.

2) "Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image,"
Except crosses, the bible, pictures of Jesus, etc.

3) "Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain;"
Unless we're lying for the lord (this has to do with swearing oaths, not cursing)

4) "Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy."
Unless there's a game on. Oh and how many women put on the big spread on Sunday? Isn't that "work"?

5) "Honor thy father and thy mother:"
and nag them to absolute death about your fundie fantasies. Threaten them with hellfire and disrupt all family get togethers until you are no longer welcome.

6) "Thou shalt not kill."
Unless it's in war, corporal punishment, or an abortion doctor. Well to be honest, I'm not sure how this made it into the top 10 since most of the bible goes on about how to kill people in the most horrific ways

7) "Thou shalt not commit adultery"
Unless you can keep it secret

8) "Thou shalt not steal."
Unless you put Gods name on it, or it's from the government, or those stinkin heathens

9) "Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor."
Unless you are "lying for the lord" or your neighbour is another stinkin heathen.

10) "Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor's house,.....nor anything that is thy neighbor's
Ahh crap, you people worship greed so much there's nothing I can say here.

So much for Christian absolute morality. Laws are there to make society run smoothly. Just remember whats good for the fox is bad for the goose.

And what the fuck is with you people and the raping of babies and animals? Damn, I wouldn't let your kind anywhere near my kids or my pets!

"An atheist who is consistant with atheism has to say that there is nothing inherently wrong with raping a baby"

*sigh* So we either have to denounce being an atheist or admit that raping a baby is what atheists do...how about being an atheist who thinks baby rapers should go to jail? I know you didnt give us that option, but we do have it no matter how much you want to ignore it..so I will choose THAT option.

Just wondering, what ultimate source of Morals did your god get his morals from? Or did he just arbitrarily make them up? I also want to know which god your god worships, or is your god an atheist who worships no one?

Show me in the Bible where raping a baby is considered wrong, then we can have a conversation about morality.

"An atheist who is consistant with atheism has to say that there is nothing inherently wrong with raping a baby. Viewing it as wrong would only be a subjective opinion."

People with this mentality are mentally unstable -- if they were to become an atheist themselves, they probably WOULD have no problem with raping a baby, seeing they've had this view of atheists so ingrained into them.

Cunts.

Morality is doing what is right regardless of what you are told.

Religion is doing what you are told regardless of what is right.

"An atheist who is consistant with atheism has to say that there is nothing inherently wrong with raping a baby."

How so? It hurts the baby. Hurting a baby is wrong. Therefore raping a baby is wrong. Wouldn't you agree?

See, the problem isn't that there is no way for an atheist to have absolute right and wrong. . . the problem is that you can't even imagine there might be a way other than arbitrary rules given by some being to decide between right and wrong.

See Plato's Republic for a much more interesting investigation of frameworking justice without dependence on a deity with a penchant for Pavlovian conditioning.

Um, yeah. Refer to this quote. Apparantly deeds and actions don't matter in your religion. Blood atonement insurance covers it all.

First you have to prove that there's no absolute right or wrong without your god. We don't accept that as a given.

Wow... what is it about you fundtards that you're so obsessed with raping children?

As an atheist, it's something I never think about and would never do. Why? Because it would cause untold bodily and mental harm to the person. Because it is cruel and unnecessary. And because I'm not a sick bastard like you.

I'm an atheist and I'm about to make some claims.
Child molestation is evil.
Spousal abuse is evil.
And I believe these things wholeheartedly. And I didn't need a book to tell me these things.

Calvinism is the position of total depravity from birth. These ghouls take delight in imagining just how depraved they can be and, unfortunately, projecting that depravity upon others. Including babies.

Christians are in a difficult position, as one has only to look into the Old Testament to find out how you can sell your daughter into (sexual) slavery, how a raped woman is forced to marry her rapist, how you can have multiple wives and concubines, and how one should divide up an enemy's young women after a battle (after one got done killing all the men and boys, and all women that weren't virgins).

Any holy book that condones or barely punishes rape in any shape or form does not deserve to be looked to as a book of moral guidance, in my opinion. A shame that most Americans would disagree.

Any anyway, if baby rape is so high on the sin list, then why is 'don't covet your neighbor's stuff' on the list of the Big Ten but rape isn't even given a mention?

Never mind the concept of empathy, or the fact that atheists realize that if you go around harming other people, you will be punished severely for it by society.
