Debtors' servitude is about as reprehensible as slavery.

"Slavery then was a different form from the South - and many were willing "slaves" in order to pay off debt."
So you're saying that we as a society should bring back indentured servants?

I think someone missed a few history classes involving pre-civil war era slavery. That form of servitude was afterwards, Marcia, and very thoroughly not willing since they had no other option.

In the colonial period, this is somewhat true, in regards to indentured servants.
But, you're flat wrong for most of your post.

Baptist revisionist history...if Marcia's a Southern Baptist, I wonder if she's aware that her particular sub-denomination was founded on white supremacy and support for slavery. (And yes, that's U.S.-style chattel slavery based on the idea of people of African descent being subhuman.) They didn't even formally renounce racism and their previous support for slavery until 1995.

Slavery is slavery regardless of how they were treated, or how they came to be in that state.

Look up "indentured servants," debtors' prisons," and "slavery." I think your local public library will be of help.

Nor, evidently, the tables of the moneychangers.

You are referring to indentured servitude, and that is NOT what the old South was about.

So exactly what debt did someone in Africa owe someone in Alabama that made it OK for the white men to come kidnap them and haul them in chains across the ocean?

Indentured servitude is horrible, but it's a step up from kidnapping someone, separating him or her from the rest of the family, then selling each to the highest bidder with full understanding that they will most likely never see one another again.
Also, is the bible for slavery or against it? In the same paragraph you make arguments for both.
Methinks thou knowest not about what thou speaketh. That, and thou art a christian slavery apologist. And a dolt.

The Southern Preachers did NOT misuse the bible. They used it as it's written. It DOES condone slavery. Which is one of our (many) issues with it.
And if the Bible is the Word of God, why is it not about overthrowing evil social structures. It should be.
Especially since you all believe that God sends hurricanes and other bad weather to punish people who don't behave right, i.e. evil social structures.

Slavery then was a different form from the South - and many were willing "slaves" in order to pay off debt.
"Willing slaves" to pay off debt (i.e., indentured servants) were confined to Jews. Non-Jews were slaves the same as in the US South.
The Bible distinguishes between Jews and non-Jews:
For Jews: "And if thy brother [that dwelleth] by thee be waxen poor, and be sold unto thee; thou shalt not compel him to serve as a bondservant: [But] as an hired servant, [and] as a sojourner, he shall be with thee, [and] shall serve thee unto the year of jubilee: And [then] shall he depart from thee, [both] he and his children with him, and shall return unto his own family, and unto the possession of his fathers shall he return." (Lev. 25:39-41)
For Non-Jews: Both thy bondmen, and thy bondmaids, which thou shalt have, [shall be] of the heathen that are round about you; of them shall ye buy bondmen and bondmaids. Moreover of the children of the strangers that do sojourn among you, of them shall ye buy, and of their families that [are] with you, which they begat in your land: and they shall be your possession. And ye shall take them as an inheritance for your children after you, to inherit [them for] a possession; they shall be your bondmen for ever: ... (Lev. 25:44-46)
and finally : ... "but over your brethren the children of Israel, ye shall not rule one over another with rigour." (Lev. 25:46)

Because driving an awl through someone's ear is kind, right?
The Bible only gives information about the rights possessed by Hebrew slaves. Doesn't restrict treatment of foreign slaves, mate.

Thanks for reinforcing the idea that all Southerners are like you. Many of us down here have a different view than your watered down apologetic on slavery. I don't give a damn what the bible says about being good and kind to slaves. You literally kidnap people from Africa and if they don't die on the ship their families are ripped apart with no regret by the buyer. Tell you what: Next summer on a humid and 102 day start working in the yard and keep working for 12 hours(no cheating! can't go indoors for an air-conditioner break!). Maybe a glass or 2 of warm, contaminated water and then get back to me about how kind and good that is. Slavery is evil. Period.
