Quote# 62458

I had to laugh when I read the email from someone who couldn't imagine what a "leftist" education would be. Although I have since recovered, in my elementary, secondary, and most of my college educations, I was the victim of just such a scheme.

For example, in my junior high years, I was taught that the Palestinians were right and Zionism was racism. I was taught that abortion is a right, and "anti-choice" extremists were not only disagreeable, but both stupid and cruel. I was taught that animals are more important than people. In my math class, we once figured the cost of raising a child as opposed to the cost of having an abortion. Every year, when we had debates and individual presentations, the issues of gun control, abortion, prayer in schools, and Palestine were always among the most popular. There was no question which side of the argument would garner the better grade.

In college, I was trained in Marxism, Maoism, and feminism. I was taught a class on sexism, racism, classism and heterosexism in American life by an avowed Wiccan who wore a pentagram around her neck in class. I was taught political economy by a professor who carried a copy of Das Kapital everywhere he went and called it his "Bible." (Of course, none of my instructors would ever have carried a REAL Bible.)

At long last, God chased me down and changed my mind. I became a Christian just before beginning my PhD dissertation, after many years as a teacher's pet feminist secularist. Things...changed. My professors were terribly disappointed and lost all respect for me (though eventually they did pass my dissertation which was promptly academically published, despite treating pro-life activists as a legitimate political faction instead of a disease in the body politic).

On the way, however, there was no end to the insults to which I was subjected. For example, I asked my major professor for a letter of reference to apply to teach at a Christian college. He agreed, but told me I shouldn't need it. "A place like that," he said, "isn't looking for excellence." Really? Suppose I had received the same reply when asking for a reference for a historically black university? Would I have had grounds to sue? You betcha--and this professor would have been the first to say so. But in the rareified air of the academy, only one kind of prejudice doesn't have an odor to it.

Sounds like an awesome school.

Wow. Not a single bit of this could possibly be anything other than a fabrication.
Except the last paragraph: Most Christian colleges are looking for religious convictions over academic excellence. Your professor was right.

Guess what, "PhD Mom," Lying For Jesus is still breaking one of the Ten Commandments (the 8th or 9th, depending on which version you're looking at).

The only bit of that lunatic rant that makes any sense is

"A place like that [a Christian college]" he said, "isn't looking for excellence".

The mind boggles where "PhD Mom" got her "PhD" from.

"Burger University" I'd imagine.

True that. When you can't get hired without signing the "Statement of Faith," the place isn't exactly looking for the best of the best.

Also, wouldn't the professor's comment seem to imply (in spite of the poster's diatribe) that he seems to feel that her work is excellent and she would be wasted there?

I am (as of Monday) a graduate of an Ivy League University. Granted, I paid little attention to religion while at UPenn, but I feel a PoliSci major, with a minor in psych and Russian adequately educates me in responding to idiots like this:

I went to a (suburban) public high school. I don't recall any more than a passing mention of evolution, or birth control, et al.

I went to UPenn, and I don't feel that any kind of marxist ideology was forced upon me or anyone else, and as a poli sci major, I feel as though I would be one of the prime targets. During the 08 elections, there were *plenty* of McCain supporters on campus. I also don't particularly recall any of my professors *explicity* advocating either side; if anything, they made it clear at the very beginning that they were doing their level best to take *no* side whatsoever.

Now, maybe that's just because I went to a decent educational institute (as opposed to a Bible college) and maybe it's because I was a dangerous leftist beforehand (who can't vote anyway) but I don't see this dangerous leftist indoctrination. As far as I'm concerned, in a liberal arts setting, tertiary education is all about teaching you how to think critically, how to research, and the kind of questions that need answering.

(p.s. if any of my spelling/grammar is off, I am busy *celebrating* my graduation with booze, which I'm sure these fucktards would disprove of as well)

What the hell kind of junior high were you going to?

On the other hand, I applaud your writing ability. Most fundies couldn't write this well if their lives depended on it. I wonder, though, if it was that awful leftist education that gave you that talent...

Do you think, for a moment, that the professors in a Christian university would have treated you with anywhere NEAR this level of fairness if you did a pro-choice Ph.D. dissertation?

In my math class, we once figured the cost of raising a child as opposed to the cost of having an abortion.

This speaks volumes - the fact that you'd denounce a simple, objective evaluation such as that shows only that you wouldn't even want to know what the actual nature of reality was if it happened not to support your views on the matter.

Oh, it's also an obvious lie for Jesus like the whole rest of your post. It's always especially pathetic when someone obviously lacking any accredited higher education convinces themselves they can actually pass themselves off as a graduate to try and steal some kind of authority for their inane opinions - in this moron's place, even a fucking postgraduate!

I don't think you were "trained" in Marxism, Maoism or feminism, I doubt you could even present an accurate definition of any of them, nor explain the difference between Marxist and Maoist thinking.

P.S. I agree with your professor, or the professor character in your story. You probably made the whole pile of rot up.

Whoa, sounds like some heavy-duty persecution there, bubba.

Mind telling me where I can read this dissertation, it being published and all? Or is that part lies like the rest of your little post?

"In my math class, we once figured the cost of raising a child as opposed to the cost of having an abortion."

Actually, that sounds like a damn good idea in junior high. Most kids that age have no concept of the economic cost of childrearing, and that information just might help your abstinence education program along. You know, as in "If you have sex you might get pregnant and it will cost $100,000 to raise the child. Where is that money coming from?" Kind of like comparing the costs of a DWI (legal fees, etc.) with the cost of a taxi in telling people not to drink and drive.

You should have done the proper thing the moment god opened your heart to him and immediately dropped out of school without finishing your dissertation. You don't need a PhD in order to be barefoot and pregnant in the kitchen.

What a terrible christian you are, learn your place!

In black colleges they don't distort facts and evidence to fit those listed in an ancient book. That's why he wouldn't have said the same about a black college. Stating that a certain school isn't focused on excellence when it doesn't educate students with information based on evidence is not discrimination.

Orestes: You've never heard of Hyles-Anderson College, then? They actually offer a course of study in Marriage and Motherhood (probably not as a PhD, but there's still doctorate and bachelor versions). Granted, we're talking about a fundamentalist Baptist college that *intentionally avoids accreditation for fear of taint by the worldly*, but...
