And that is an example of the evils of RELIGION, not the evils of abortion. Those people weren't making a rational decision to terminate a pregnancy because of any real life inability to raise the child. No, they were offering up their children to appease a diety.

Last time I checked the bible didn´t mention anything about our generation in the 21st century.
The old testament has, however, a lot to say about killing children.As Narwhaleman mention, there there are a lot of passages where god orders to kill children (of israels enemies).
Aside from this there are numerous other passages, like, causing an abortion by letting th woman swallow a substance to verify whether the woman was faithful to her husband or not.

Abortion is (probably) always the lesser of two evils. Not at all a reason to sing a few joyful songs. Nobody is HAPPY to have an abortion.
Here in Sweden, if the pregnancy is more than 12 weeks you have to go to councelling before the abortion. Not to be persuaded to abstain, but because it's recognized that this is a very hard decission, that will weigh heavy on anyone with normal feelings. The councelling will help you make the best possible decission, based on your circumstances.

The only way I can see this as a defensible practice in the long run, is IF those children given to the fire were defective. After all, as late as Roman times, it was an accepted practice to abandon malformed newborns beyond the city gate.

Yep. It seems God misses the days when we would kill them with more sadistic methods, like bashing their heads against rocks (Psalms 137:9), or disemboweling pregnant women with the sword (Hosea 13:16).
But you do have a point. A fetus in the womb is still a sacred life and therefore should be treated as such. Unless of course the mother is athiest. God made it very clear through Moses what should happen then! (Numbers 31)
