Didn't your god order the Israelites to murder children in the most horrific ways imaginable?

Chapter and verse, please!

First of all
Fetus != Child
And that is an example of the evils of RELIGION, not the evils of abortion. Those people weren't making a rational decision to terminate a pregnancy because of any real life inability to raise the child. No, they were offering up their children to appease a diety.
Not the same thing.

"The Molech worshipers of ancient times used to put their children for sacrifice into a red-hot statue of Molech that was heated by fire. While the children died they beat drums to drown out their cries."
So the Molech worshiping civilisation only lasted for one generation?

Anyone who is captured will be run through with a sword. Their little children will be dashed to death right before their eyes. Their homes will be sacked and their wives raped by the attacking hordes. For I will stir up the Medes against Babylon, and no amount of silver or gold will buy them off. The attacking armies will shoot down the young people with arrows. They will have no mercy on helpless babies and will show no compassion for the children. (Isaiah 13:15-18 NLT)

At least the children's suffering was finite. The Christian God is going to do this, but forever.

Last time I checked the bible didn´t mention anything about our generation in the 21st century.
The old testament has, however, a lot to say about killing children. As Narwhaleman mention, there there are a lot of passages where god orders to kill children (of israels enemies).
Aside from this there are numerous other passages, like, causing an abortion by letting th woman swallow a substance to verify whether the woman was faithful to her husband or not.

And yet there's no evidence of ANY of that actually happening....
4/19/2009 12:45:08 PM
They don't. That´s what happens when you think that we´re still in the second millenium BC.

I believe it's Jeremiah 7:31
4/19/2009 12:48:25 PM
This shit again?

Abortion is (probably) always the lesser of two evils. Not at all a reason to sing a few joyful songs. Nobody is HAPPY to have an abortion.
Here in Sweden, if the pregnancy is more than 12 weeks you have to go to councelling before the abortion. Not to be persuaded to abstain, but because it's recognized that this is a very hard decission, that will weigh heavy on anyone with normal feelings. The councelling will help you make the best possible decission, based on your circumstances.

Well that's stupid. The drummers would be in the way.

The only way I can see this as a defensible practice in the long run, is IF those children given to the fire were defective. After all, as late as Roman times, it was an accepted practice to abandon malformed newborns beyond the city gate.
yahweh's angry all right -- he hates the fact that healthy humanity is depriving him of the company of his own defective kind.

If he's so angry he should do something about it. But he can't - he's not real.
4/19/2009 1:27:33 PM
A load of Molochs.
4/19/2009 1:34:43 PM
Funny how the only references to "Molech" I can find are from Christian sources...
4/19/2009 2:00:39 PM
I'm sorry, I thought that said reality check. I really need new glasses.
4/19/2009 2:12:20 PM
what scripture has anything to say about "this" generation? does he actually think this is still the middle ages or something?
4/19/2009 2:13:14 PM
No, no, you're thinking the Brazen Bull. That's Greek.
And then the Christians upped the ante and invented the iron maiden =D
4/19/2009 3:13:18 PM
Yeah, yeah, yeah. Your God character is always angry at the particular generation which exists at the time some moron deems it wicked.

Exodus 22:29 Thou shalt not delay to offer the first of thy ripe fruits, and of thy liquors: the firstborn of thy sons shalt thou give unto me.
Is this the reason why Yahweh is pissed off? No blood sacrifice in his name?
4/19/2009 3:23:02 PM
No. Because there's a difference between a child and a cluster of cells. No matter how many times you say it or how hysterical you become, those two things will never be comparable in reality.
4/19/2009 3:24:38 PM
What religion was Abraham?
4/19/2009 4:01:57 PM
[Its no wonder that Yahweh tells us in Scripture He's angry at this wicked generation.]
Yep. It seems God misses the days when we would kill them with more sadistic methods, like bashing their heads against rocks (Psalms 137:9), or disemboweling pregnant women with the sword (Hosea 13:16).
But you do have a point. A fetus in the womb is still a sacred life and therefore should be treated as such. Unless of course the mother is athiest. God made it very clear through Moses what should happen then! (Numbers 31)
