Quote# 61469

A Catholic German bishop has come under fire for his remarks condemning atheists. In a sermon given on Easter Sunday, the bishop of Augsburg, Walter Mixa, warned of rising atheism in Germany. "Wherever God is denied or fought against, there people and their dignity will soon be denied and held in disregard," he said in the sermon. He also said that "a society without God is hell on earth" and quoted the Russian author Fyodor Dostoyevsky: "If God does not exist, everything is permitted."

Most controversially, he linked the Nazi and Communist crimes to atheism. "In the last century, the godless regimes of Nazism and Communism, with their penal camps, their secret police and their mass murder, proved in a terrible way the inhumanity of atheism in practice." Christians and the Church were always the subject of "special persecution" under these systems, he said.

Keep in mind, the Nazis persecuted the Catholic Church, too.

Hitler was officially a "German Christian," whatever that's supposed to mean. All other religions were enemies of the Reich and treated in a way that befit them. Catholicism would have gone the way of the JWs in the Greater German Reich eventually.

"Pedo church"? Come on, some cases don't mean all, or even most priests are pedophile!

Oh, we have history at school. That bishop is an idiot, that's all.
If he was not, he would know, that Hitler himself was sure to work out of god's will, was a creationist and had connections to higher church members.
Of course there where some catholics who opposed Hitler, but most just did nothing at all and some were clearly on Hitler's side.

I fear not knowing the facts is not illegal. Saying "the holocaust never happend" or "The Nazis where right with what they did" would be illegal, though, as far as I know (but I am not totally sure)...

"This is the charming church that excommunicated a bunch of doctors plus parents who saved a raped & pregnant 9 year old by aborting the twins she never would have been able to carry to term. They didn't forget the child either, they excommunicated the child for good measure. They didn't excommunicate the rapist though."

No, the rapist/stepfather confessed his sins to a priest and recieved absolution. Apparently it would have been better (in their eyes) if she had died along with the twins in the third trimester when her body gave up under the strain.

On behalf of my home country I would like apologize to the rest of the world. I can assure that people like that are usually shunned and laughed at

First that Bishop that insisted that the Holocaust did not exist, and now this. I just wish they would shut up and crawl back into the hole they came from.

We have history in school, and we discuss the Nazi period extensively. The classes are too full and the teachers overworked, but that is a different problem. As much as I hate the German education system, we are always encouraged to learn about the past. The school also offers classes on the dangers of the Neo Nazis and the detection of their manipulating methods.

--> What should be done against Neo Nazis and their influence on teenagers. (sadly it is in German, but it is very interesting.)

Once again, I wish to apologize on behalf of my country. Every country has a few nutters. We do try to keep them contained, so that they can not cause harm to society.

The Soviet Union had Orthodox priests on it's payroll.

in fact, the nazis enjoyed a close relationship with the catholic church (though there were those who resisted heroically).

Hitler was known to be an occultist. He used christianity to motivate his country to do some very awful things. You might remember them, Wally.

"he linked the Nazi and Communist crimes to atheism. "In the last century, the godless regimes of Nazism and Communism"

By definition, the likes of Lenin, Stalin, Khrushchev and every other Soviet premier were Atheists. Hitler? If he was an Atheist, as per your 'claim', then how do you account for this?:

Proved wrong much, Walter?

The Bible says nothing about abortion. It says nothing about contraception. Least of all condemning such. But it does say something about rich men, camels & needles. Also about Jesus telling someone to sell all they had and distributing it to the poor. So why aren't all you Catholic priests, bishops, cardinals - and even Pope Ratzy himself - wearing just ordinary clothes, and performing Mass in tents, hmmmmm? And why are all those kiddy diddlers still among your ranks, hmmmmmmm?

Therefore the Catholic Church is a Godless regime.

You'd expect this measure of steaming bullshit from American preachers/fundies, but REALLY - Germans ought to know better. It's your damn recent history.
Pisses me off worse than when some random uninformed Yank pulls this.
