A group of hard-line Saudi clerics urged the kingdom's new information minister to ban women from appearing on TV or in newspapers and magazines.
In a statement, the 35 clergymen also called on Abdel Aziz Khoja, who was appointed by King Abdullah February 14 as part of a wide reform drive, to prohibit the playing of music and music shows on television.

I can see why the clerics would want to ban music on television. It might stimulate the minds of the faithful, causing them to think.
However, a ban on women in the media? Why not just come out of the closet and buy a copy of Playgirl?
"I can't stop jacking off! And somehow it's all everybody else's fault!"
As for the music thing, I have absolutely no idea .
My first reaction to this was "Wasn't that the same King Abdullah who was on Star Trek: Voyager?".
As it turns out, he isn't. Darn.
Godbuster made me lol.
Oh, I think I need to say something relevant or something. Uh... you Saudi clerics make Puritan New England look like Brave New World ? Let's go with that.
Strongly reminds me of the Taliban.
Maybe their next wet dreams might be, to ban every sports event from stadiums and use these stadiums for shootings and stonings instead (for example for women who dared to drive a car or who weren´t totally covered by their burquas while outside of their homes) ;)
This really epitomises fundamentalist mentality: the assumption that the more extreme and pointless the regulations, the better. Fundies in the US like Bro Randy will praise himself for having the moral insight to realise that young people of the opposite sex should not even touch one another or be in the same room alone as someone of the opposite sex. Pretending to find certain innocuous behaviours disgusting is such a lazy and thoughtless attempt at appearing moral to others that it deserves only derision and laughter.
When are we going to all band together and collectively laugh at Saudi Arabia and make it clear to them that we find their so-called "prevention of vice" to be a utter joke and that rather than making them appear moral, they actually come across as pathetically capitulating to our most primitive and barbaric behaviour patterns?
Take the pledge with me!
I, (your name here), pledge that for every time I read about one of these stories coming out of the cesspool of fundamentalism that is Saudi Arabia, I shall wipe my arse with the Saudi flag.
"My business senses detect a perfect black market. Cha-ching!"
Heh. My best friends uncle went over to Saui Arabia about 10 years ago on a business trip. He brought a couple cartons ot premium smokes and a couple bottle of top chelf booze.
When he came back, he didn't have the smokes or booze, but he did have a shitton of cash. Saudis want this stuff bad. They are willing to pay almost anything for it.
Yeah, those rightous puritanical Saudi princes, repression at home - visits to London brothels abroad. Does the banning of music and women in public remind you of someone? Who was that "other" psychotic Islamist throwback regime that ruled a little nation between the borders of Pakistan and Iran? Remember them?
@ Godbuster: I was gonna say something, but can't improve on your comment!
Anyway, it all boiled down to "hateful, disgusting wastes of carbon."
This, though sick, is also funny. All these self-proclaimed holy men believe they've got an almighty force on their side, that they're big tough guys, a mixture of cowboy and ascetic saint.
And yet they're absolutely shitting-their-diapers terrified of gurlz.
Mister Spak said:
"Or we could remove all women from Saudi Arabia and completely eliminate these kinds of problems."
I'll take a couple off their hands.
Hey, I'm Zeus, I'll stick my dick in nearly anything!
talking about shit like this with friends, one finds out how few people are ready to admit this kind of shit is inhuman, fuckin evil, tyranny that would make Hitler appalled. it's almost the unanimous public opinion that we should have intervened in Rwanda and everyone's going on about helping out Gaza and Sri Lanka. why do we not only sit back and let such a mess as the middle east not only get away with this, but damn near forbid even criticizing them.
"What exactly does that leave on TV? Nature shows and the news?"
Nature shows? Don't be ridiculous, these are full of sinfully female animals and plants, not to mention the perverse fascination these shows seem to have with the depraved ways said animals and plants reproduce! :P
Confused?
So were we! You can find all of this, and more, on Fundies Say the Darndest Things!
