Some speculate that part of Darwin's mental problems were due to his nagging, gnawing fear that he had devoted his "life to a fantasy"—and a "dangerous one" at that. This fear was that his theory was false and there was, in fact, a divine Creator.

Oh noes! If Darwin had mental problems and doubted his own theory, that means that his careful, meticulous gathering of evidence to support his ideas is completely...no wait a sec. Even if that were true (which anyone with a brain could tell you, isn't) that would have no bearing on the validity of a scientific theory. So, in short, I can only assume that in this case the Ph.D stands for 'Pillock has dumb'.
Gee, Darwin's personal issues couldn't have been because of three generations of inbreeding with his wife's family and severe depression caused by the death of his youngest daughter.
Oh and he treated his female relatives like children during the Victorian age. Yes, how unusual.
Well, I guess it's a shame science is based on cult of personalities instead of objective evidence, unlike say.. religion.
From the source:
"*Dr. Bergman is on the Biology faculty at Northwest State
College in Ohio."
Well, if he's a biology PhD, what the fuck is he doing writing about psychology?
What mental problems? Also, note to young Americans, stay the fuck away from the biology course at Northwest State, Ohio.
Some probably do, mostly, I suspect, creationists, or thick fuckers as I like to refer to them as.

Hi Jerry;
For the sake of argument, let's assume that what you've said isn't so much bullshit.
How does this effect the veracity of the ToE?
I sometimes get emo and fear my art isn't good enough. Doesn't mean I'm absolutely going to fail and I should just stop trying.
(I hope...)
In the same way, the fact that he might have continued to have doubts about his theories doesn't mean they were absolutely wrong. If anything, that just means he's a scientist, as he didn't just make a claim and call it truth. Unlike certain people.

You people get more and more desperate by the day, don't you? Even if Darwin was a raving loon it would have no bearing WHATSOEVER on the validity of his ideas. The evidence, the huge, overwhelming mountain of evidence, supports the idea that populations of living things change over time.
Thanks for the laugh, though.

Yes, I know that the whole "replace words with other ones to turn it back on the fundie" approach is getting old but, hey, if the shoe fits...
Who cares about Darwin's mental problems? The man's dead.
The Theory of Evolution has withstood 150 years of testing and is used today by scientists all over the world. Even if the USA turns to creationism (Buddha forbid!), the rest of the world sure as hell won't, and we'll be the ones who suffer for our ignorance.

Not only that, but the veracity of the ToE is not dependent on Darwin's mental state later in life. Whether is beliefs ultimately drove him crazy or not is irrelevant, because we know now that he was on the right track.
It also should be said that any fear he (or anyone like him) may have felt would not be the fault of scientific thought -- rather, it would be the byproduct of a hyperreligious environment, one that damns people to hell for thinking outside the box. If Darwin had gone mad out of fear and guilt, the Church - that loving institution - would bear the blame.
I recall reading somewhere that Darwin occasionally locked himself in his room for weeks at a time, and the author of that particular article speculated that Darwin did so because he was bi-polar. One could just as easily speculate that he only wanted a little peace and quiet. After all this time, what difference does it make anyway?
Confused?
