Quote# 44657

The question is why are these people under attack if the scientific community is truly interested in open dialogue? The reality is: most people are willing to believe evolution, something they don't truly understand or even endeavor to, simply because it affirms their lifestyle. If there ever was an opiate for the masses, it would be evolution.

When a person in a lab coat proclaims evolution as the explanation for the creation of life, and someone who might know basic chemistry but no more, believes it (takes it on faith), no one balks or criticizes. That theory says we can do what we want as long as we don't get caught. Why wouldn't they latch on to such a self-justifying description of life?

The question is why are these people under attack if the religious community is truly interested in open dialogue? The reality is: most people are willing to believe the bible, something they don't truly understand or even read, simply because it affirms their lifestyle. If there ever was an opiate for the masses, it would be christianity.

When a person in a suit and tie proclaims god as the explanation for the creation of life, and someone who might have a IQ of 75 but no more, believes it (takes it on faith), no one balks or criticizes. That theory says we can do what we want as long as god says its okay. Why wouldn't they latch on to such a self-justifying description of life?

"...When a person in a lab coat proclaims evolution as the explanation for the creation of life, and someone who might know basic chemistry but no more..."

Evolution is the explanation of the diversity of life, not the creation of life.

No chemistry necessary for evolution.

So mikeypoo doesn't understand even the basics of evolution.

Mikeypoo must be stupid.

"When a person in a lab coat proclaims evolution as the explanation for the creation of life"

No point in reading any further than that. Look, if you're going to criticize something it's generally accepted to be a good idea if you know what it says to begin with.

Evolution holds no position on the origin of life.

"When a person in a lab coat proclaims evolution as the explanation for the creation of life..."

Strawman (or you're just stupid). Evolutionary theory does not attempt to explain the origins of life on Earth.

"... believes it (takes it on faith), no one balks or criticizes."

People blindly believing in something for which there exists no evidence? Imagine that!

"That theory says we can do what we want as long as we don't get caught."

Once again, evolutionary theory has nothing to say about morality; but this is quite ironic, coming from someone whose god followed an extreme example of the "might makes right" principle throughout your Bible. Your Biblical god (supposedly) got away with the murders of millions of innocent people. Why don't you apply your "reasoning" to the actions of your brutal, sadistic, totalitarian god?

I usurped god.

A scientific theory, by definition, is constantly undergoing criticism from scientists. Evolution has gone through plenty of criticism, and still stands -- to date, no one has produced anything that can disprove evolution, and many people have brought forth new evidence to support it.

The question is why are these people under attack if the scientific community is truly interested in open dialogue?

"Open dialog" means intelligent dialog, not stupid arguments by people who don't know what they're talking about. It doesn't include:

> arguments from personal incredulity (that wipes out the entire of "intelligent design")

> God-of-the-gaps arguments ("evolution can't answer question X, therefore God must have done it")

> unsupported "what-ifs" (What if the speed of light changed? What if radioactive decay rates change?)

> "you weren't there, so you can't prove what happened" arguments.

That pretty much wipes out every creationist argument there is.

There's SOME truth in what he's saying. You gotta understand evolution to accept it or reject it (something which he clearly doesn't)

Stupid creationists are "under attack" because they keep bringing up the same tired, disproven agruments over and over and over again. The scientific community is generally willing to look at and evaluate any evidence you bring, but you have to bring SOME EVIDENCE to the party.

What, exactly, do you think "open dialogue" is? That you get to say whatever you want and nobody will tell you you're wrong?

"That theory says we can do what we want as long as we don't get caught"

What, evolution? No, evolution explains how life develops. It says absolutely nothing about morality.

How the fuck is evolution an opiate for the masses?

By the way Marx wasn't deriding religion when he said that.

First, you paraphrase one of the harshest, most succinct criticism of religion ever while using religion to knock something else.

Second, you are an idiot.

Third, as a semi-regular use of opiates, your metaphor is dead.

Fourth, you are an idiot.

Fifth, nothing goes here.

Sixth, you are an idiot.

How does acceptance of evolution affirm my lifestyle? I have inherited a few genetic conditions, such as migraine, lupus and depression, is that what you mean? Why are you so fired up about my need to avoid caffeine and direct sunlight?

When a person in a lab coat proclaims evolution as the explanation for the creation of life...

Evolution doesn't deal with the origin of life. All it addresses is the process living things undergo in order to adapt to their environment.

...a self-justifying description of life?

I am the only person to whom I must justify my lifestyle and decisions. I choose to justify myself to certain other people such as my wife. Beyond those boundaries, everyone else can get knotted.

In science, dialogue means speaking and exchanging ideas in order to find evidence, not to admit any bullshit that somebody says without submitting that to critical thinking.
