Don't you find it interesting that only God and Jesus' name is blasphemed and no other god. You don't hear people going around saying, "Buddha darn-it" or "Allah darn-it."
Its interesting that God made one of His commandments to not take the Lord's name in vain. And what do we see all around us...people using His name in vain. Why not any other god? Maybe its because the other gods are not real and when something goes wrong, God's name is used as a curse word.
And why do all Atheists and other religions out there use His name in vain, if they don't believe in Him? It just doesn't make sense.

Actually in Muslim countries they use Allah's name in vane. As for Buddha's name... Buddha is not a god because Buddhism is an agnostic religion that doesn't specify or care if god(s) exists.
It is interesting that people who believe in god(s) use the name of their own blasphemously, though this also pertains to people of no religion that just have to listen to those of a particular religion all the time.
Only nations where Christianity is dominant do people say "God damn it." If you go to other countries, they use different expletives that are consistent with their own cultures.
Generally, their current, existing deities, if any, are not as petty as the Christian one, so they would know that asking or demanding their god to damn something would be fruitless. Your god, on the other hand, is a bloodthirsty prick, so it would be reasonable for a believer to expect that he would damn someone/something that a believer hated, if they asked.
Maybe because we live in Western civilization, and it's thoroughly ingrained in our culture?
Besides, Mohammed and Shiva don't have the really filthy, percussive quality you can get from a seething "Jesus -FUCKING- Christ."
god damn it! but which one of them?
You just can't presume, that if someone says "god" that it automaticly means that one (god) that you believe in.
And yes, the most common swear I use is Perkele. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Perkele
Well, gosh dang it all to H E double hockey sticks, there neighbor - you just don't hear enough of Zoro Fuckin' Aster, either. If there's a god of blood, that's the one I would take in vein.
This is why I've trained myself to say "Gods damn it".
Not that I believe in multiple Gods, but it's easier to modify a social reflex than eliminate it. And it arguably pisses the fundies off even more.
Well, if you tell someone not to do something in an odious, patronising, bullying way, what's the first thing they're going to do?
Well, you tell us one thing and we'll do the opposite. That's what your church has been doing for centuries.
Also, "Ceiling Cat damnit!" doesn't have quite the same vitriolic quality as a good old "Christ al-fucking -mighty!" And, as an atheist, I use it to piss the fundies off, since they piss me off in so many other ways.
Yet this same person would say that Allah is a demon, Budha is a fake, and even though this person doesnt believe in these other deities, he would still say bad things about them like the atheists would.
This is just the typical "Im persecuted for Christ" knee jerk bullshit that is easily defeated.

It happened once on the old "All in the Family" TV show. Mike (atheist) tries to tell Archie (fundie) that in China, there's the Buddha. Edith wonders aloud, "So if a Chinese person sneezes, do they say, 'Buddha bless you?'"
1)Buddha isn't a diety
2)I swear by Odin, Horace, Ra, Anubis, Malcom, even sometimes SHive, when it is necessary. Sometimes, I add something after their name, like By Odin's Iron Banjo, Or By Horace's Claymore.
1. Because people from those cultures have their own ways of cursing, some of which, guess what, do involve the god. But if you only see native English speakers, you're not going to hear them.
2. Because it takes a highly dedicated atheist to respond to hitting his thumb with a hammer with "Aaagh, random fluctuations of the space time continuum!" or "Primitive and outmoded concept on a crutch!"
(I wrote #1 myself; #2 is Terry Pratchett's.)
You don't make sense!
I'll use any goddamn words I want, I don't care what you think. Words is just words, dumbass. You don't have to believe in the shit behind them to use them.
However, aside from "goddamn", any other god-derived expression I will use "goddess" (example: "Good goddess"). So, nya.
And why do all Atheists and other religions out there use His name in vain, if they don't believe in Him?
Just like "woman" isn't my name, "god" isn't god's name.
God has a name. It's Jehovah. Nobody says "Jehovah damnit."
Jesus titty fucking CHRIST!!! People say Yabba Dabba Do, and Fred Flintsone isn't real either. God damn it.
[i actually never say Yabba Dabba Do]
Actually in Tuscany (in Italy) we have a rather unusual imprecation that involves anatomical parts of Buddha... But anyway Tuscany is notorious in Italy for its extreme variety of swearings involving God, several saints, Mary and many other divine beings...
Tuscany is also probably one of the least religious regions in Italy.
i hate how egotistical christians are about their god.
"God is our god's name!"
i thought he went by jehova, yeshua, jesus, yaweh, adon, kadosh, and many MANY more.
also, allah is nothing more then the literal translation of "God" into arabic. i have no doubts that middle eastern men swear to allah as much as we sware to god.
(names came from http://www.ldolphin.org/Names.html )
It's because "darn-it" sounds stupid.
@Mling:
That's "Bismillah,
No, we will not let you go".
I'm sorry. Queen(Freddie) is always a soft point on me.
Other religions use God's name in vain? Well blow me down.
Why do you think it doesn't make sense for atheists to inclde "God" as a swearword, along with "shit", "fuck", and "cunt"?
We don't mean to say God exists when we swear, any more than we mean we want to go to bed with you when we say "Fuck you".
All clear now?
I am a physicist. At a lab I worked for some years we had a tradition when something went wrong to utter curses like "Holy cosmic rays!!!!" or "Dam*** Albert Einstein!!!"
And this gives an interesting insight into what curses really are: They are things of CULTURE.
In western countries people use curses like "Godda***!!!" or "Jesus Christ!!!" just because christianity dominated our culture for around 1500 years now.
Maybe because Christianity has been infused into our culture for the last thousand years or so. As Sweden was Christianized around 900 B.C. by Ansgar, it's been quite a while since we were Aesir cultists.
I have to admit, my usual swear-word when I get surprised or overwhelmed is the Swedish equivalent of Lord Devils (Herre Jävlar).
Confused?
