Second question implies the answer to the first - as one of the oldest mass-produced, publicly purchasable books, the bible's built up a lot of momentum over the years.

Bear in mind that older != better. If I set out to buy a science textbook I'm going to get the most recent, up to date copy, not one that's centuries old and full of disproven ideas.

The massive givaways is where the numbers add up, Americans have been conned into sending Bibles to countries for years that have NO interest in them or already have them.

There are many older writings than the Bible, especially in Egypt and Mesopotamia. In some cases, we have original manuscripts over 4000 years old on clay tablets in Mesopotamian libraries or carved in stone in Egyptian monuments.
