In the UK the seriously psychologically disturbed accused of a serious offence can avoid a criminal trial and possible jail sentence if their defence can prove they are 'not fit to plead'. In which case they can be 'sectioned' and sent to a secure mental hospital instead.
Does the USA have a similar 'Get-out-of Jail-free' clause? Over here we fairly often read stories of people who'd never stand trial in the UK receiving the death sentence in places like Texas so I imagine not, at least in some states. It does sound as though Hovind is doing his best to prove he's insane though.
