There is no reason why God couldn't have "designed" evolution. That's called "theistic evolution". Many scientists of faith accept it. In fact, such a god would actually be far smarter than the simple god imagined by fundies. Evolution and God are not in conflict. The conflict is only between evolution and the Bible, not evolution and God. It's fundies who deny the omnipotence of God - they create God in the image of the Bible, a book written 4,000 years ago by a bunch of bronze age Arab sheep herder.
The number of chromosomes is an irrelevant statistic. Chromosomes can split and recombine. Ferns have thousands of chromosomes.

Come on, as a fundie you can basically claim whatever you want. How about you argue that god himself has made evolution happen, and it's all part of his creation process?
