It's almost as if these guys expect Jesus to return to the Earth wearing an Armani suit or something. If they had been alive back in Jerusalem 2000 years ago, they would have ridiculed and mocked Jesus' poor, rude cloak.

Now that you mention this, this reminds me of The Name of the Rose, more exactly the controversy about whether or not Jesus owned the robe he wore that was supposed to be discussed before the murders began.

He hopes that, if he sucks up to them hard enough, they'll let him in the club. Therefore, he insists on meaningless standards and petty rules, in order to convince the Alphas that he is good enough to be one of them.
