Quote# 26906

I tell you, any parishioner who wears jeans to church is going for himself. Anyone who dresses up is going for God. A jeans faith cannot sustain Christianity.

"...going for himself."
"...going for God."

What does that actually mean? Some kind of Americanism or just very bad grammar?

Not much of an all powerful God if he can be defeated by wearing jeans, huh?

Since Adam and Eve were originally nude, and the bible god has seen all clothing since, I seriously doubt he/she/it would care what you showed up in. Besides, I rather see Jesus as a T-shirt and levis kind of guy.

So if someone is homeless and all they have is a pair of jeans you'd kick them out?

If your god is so picky on who worships him that he will disallow the prayers and praise from someone who is wearing street clothes then fuck you and your god in the eye.

So you're saying that god only cares about opulance and pageantry? That it is better to look good then to truly care? Holy shit, here I thought you were ignoring the teachings of your own christ, you are actually claiming the exact opposite!

Sounds like someone has a hard-on for Solomon.

Wait, so, the more bling, the more you love Jesus?

Anyone who dresses up is going for the sake of appearances. Anyone who doesn't is going because they want to and have true faith.

Isn't that just as plausible?

Well, back in Jesus' time people apparently wore togas. Why don't we make those mandatory?

What a pathetic, petty god you worship! Maybe if he stopped worrying about who's wearing pants and what kind and took a break from watching people have sex he'd have some time to actually do some goood.

Didn't Jesus say something about people who put on a show when they go to prayer? Yes, that's right - he called them hypocrites.

Well, what do you know - yet another fundie who doesn't appear to have read the gospels.

How about:

"Any parishioner who wears jeans is going for the faith. Anyone who dresses up is more concerned about impressing the self-appointed judges."

Wow... Vex, what you're saying is that a pair of trousers are stronger than your religion. Wow.

Right, because God only loves you if you look rich. Is that what you're saying?

If you think faith is measured by something as shallow as appearance, then I suggest you tear out that whole New Testament part of your bible. It's obvious you don't read it.

God does not care what you wear to church. Yes, dressing up in Western culture is considered a sign of respect and formality, and it may be a social faux pas to wear jeans to church, but that is a human standard, not a divine one.

It's almost as if these guys expect Jesus to return to the Earth wearing an Armani suit or something. If they had been alive back in Jerusalem 2000 years ago, they would have ridiculed and mocked Jesus' poor, rude cloak.

Geez. I was thinking, in order to respect the higher powers, folks needed to be skyclad.

I personally think it depends on the church in question. If its one where most people wear their "Sunday best", then its appropriate to dress like the rest of them. If its more casually, then more casual clothes are appropriate.

I don't think, though, it has anything to do with dressing up for Jesus. That's just showing respect for the standards of the congregation.

And of course, if jeans are all someone owned, any church worthy of the name should welcome them with open arms.

And I think the Parable of the Widow's Mite is very applicable here....

I always wore dresses to church when I went and now I'm an atheist. Nice theory.
