why am I not surprised.
That kind of behavior shouldn't be tolerated in the least. Punished severely in fact.

Fuck off and die.
5/1/2007 12:07:21 AM
It's people like this that make me wonder why an atheist would want to fight (and possibly die) for this country.
5/1/2007 12:29:26 AM
Well at least he admits that atheism isn't a religion.
Too bad he turns around and says something fucktarded right after that.
5/1/2007 12:51:53 AM
It may be that the quoted anonymous Sergeant Major doesn't actually have anything against atheists -- he's just reporting on what the military regs actually do and don't protect in practice.
5/1/2007 12:53:47 AM
So it's ok for soldiers to be asswipes to Atheists. How patriotic.
5/1/2007 12:59:47 AM
Well after all atheists do turn into \"worm food\".
5/1/2007 1:01:30 AM
Well that's easy.
No atheists should join the military and just let the good christians get killed.
5/1/2007 1:06:59 AM
Freedom of Religon also means freedom from religon.
5/1/2007 1:20:57 AM
Freedom of religion means freedom NOT TO HAVE RELIGION AT ALL.
5/1/2007 7:15:47 AM
I looked up disparage, just to be sure, and I decided 5 was a little low.

I have two perspectives on this:
1) When I was in the military as an atheist, I had to put up with this kind of idiocy from fellow airmen in Basic Training. If I'd had to put up with it from anyone higher in rank than myself, there would have been consequences.
2) My roommate was told that his religion, Asatru, was not a "real" religion. Despite its being recognized by the nations of Iceland and Norway at the time, and Denmark and Sweden since then.
On behalf of both of us, and particularly anyone who's dealt with you directly: Fuck you.

The final provision of the Act, Title VII contains miscellaneous provisions, including 701, which urges transnational corporations to adopt codes of conduct sensitive to the right to freedom of religion.

Now, rot in your grave, or I'll shove you in there.

If some brass-ass disparages my atheism, said brass-ass is just asking to be fragged.
Fuck yourself, SMaj.
8/9/2007 1:14:18 PM
With people like these in the army, what the hell do we need al-qaida and the taleban for.
8/10/2007 2:31:53 PM
No athiest are still protected by the first amendment.

Alright folks. I'm calling bullshit on this one. I am sure that a Sergeant Major may think this way, but if he actually did anything like that to a solider he'd be standing tall before the man faster than Bro. Randy unzips his fly for one of his "lambs".
I am an Atheist and obviously, I served. Recently, in fact. I enlisted because I see it this way. Anyone...Anywhere has the right to believe as they see fit. But when those beliefs spill into the lives of those around you unwillingly and cause them harm or detrimental intent..Well..lets just say that Rangers Lead the Way and be done with it.
Honestly? I would die for them to keep believing as they do. That's the whole point of the oath. No matter how much I -loathe- someone...they have a right to do it. Speaking about it and believing it is one thing...Actually doing it and enforcing it is another.
One of my Drill Sergeants was removed from the group because of comments he made to a recruit regarding his Wiccan faith. He said, "Well what the fuck is that private? Is that D&D? Are you going to cast a spell on us for laughing at you? Do you worship the Devil?"
The recruit went to the Batallion Commander and complained. Rightfully so.
What I'm saying is that in the event these things happen they are usually handled quickly and discreetly. Then again, I am one man and had only one experience.

yet on the other hand so many fundies say it IS a religion.
get your act together bigots.

And your superiors have a right to give you, or the hypothetical officers and chaplains in your scenario, a dishonorable discharge, unless I'm mistaken. Even if your gross misinterpretation of "freedom of religion" was true, seeking out and "disparaging" atheists is considered harassment. It's kinda illegal.
