More and more Britons are leaving God out of funerals. They say it's their way of celebrating the persons' life.

I think leaving God out of a funeral is like leaving blood out of your body. If the dead person was not a believer, the last thing the friends/family should be doing is celebrating. Of course, that does make THEM feel better. But it does nothing for the guy burning in hell.

In my view, it's a far better way. Secular funerals leave out the generic, flat prayers and psalms and leave only songs, eulogies and such meant for the person mourned. They're far more powerful, I've understood. Richard Dawkins' wife, I think it was, attended a funeral and later said, "thank goodness for the prayers. They were the only thing that kept me from crying". Secular funerals are by far preferable to the ones that praise myths and deities every other minute. Especially for atheists.

Not precisely. It's just as much that they're growing tired of carrying out religious traditions even though they're not religious.

So how can you celebrate knowing the person is in hell?

OK, listen closely: Atheists do not believe in God. We don't believe in Hell. We don't believe in God. We don't believe in an afterlife. How is that so damned hard to understand.

Surely he's not implying that Christians invented funerals. But then again, they already claim to have invented marriage, so why not.

I'm completely at a loss to understand what he means here. Don't non-Christians feel grief now? Don't we miss those that are dead? Can't we live good lives worthy of celebrating? Nonsense.

Which is part of the reason funerals exist - to say a final farewell and honour the dead.

You mean like Christian funerals do nothing for the guy reincarnated as a mosquito or freezing in Hel? You mean like Christian prayers do nothing to appease Zeus? No, wait, that's right. You "know" that out of a million mythologies, yours is the one true one. I forgot.

Well, we in the UK aren't as obsessed about religion (Church of England, lol) as you lot are over the pond. For two reasons:

1- We've seen what happens when nutbars are allowed to breed & vote. Three Words: Westboro Baptist Church.

2- Our healthy British sence of irony & cynicism means we can criticise everything, as evidenced in the myriad satirical TV programmes we've had/continue to: from "That Was The Week That Was" in the 60s, "Dave Allen At Large" & "Not The Nine O'Clock News" in the 70s & 80s, "Spitting Image" in the 90s, to "Have I Got News For You" and "Mock The Week" today. Royalty, Politicians, Popular media itself - and religion.

In this atmosphere, we've learned to accept, nay welcome, the fact that anything and everything is fair game for parody & having the piss ripped out of such - and in the case of politics & religion, it deserves to be.

Ergo, here in the UK, religion can't tell people what to do. Because religion has no right to tell people what to do. QED.

IN Arthur C. Clarke's will, he asked for a non-religious funeral, and for people to not grieve for him. So when I heard thathe died, I read a few of his novels, and watched "2001: A Space Odyssey". I celebrated his life in this way. As I do every day. As you do, sandy. As does everyone with access to an internet-connected computer. As part of the internet-based network, it uses telecommunication satellites, which he'd conceived as early as 1945. Surely the ultimate memorial - and legacy - a man could ever have.

And if he were alive today, Arthur would completely annihilate that question of yours - as I do right now - with another simple (but in your case, dogmatically lethal) question:

An animal - certainly a human being - can't exist without blood. It - like us - can't exist without food & water. Just ask a dog or cat if it can't live without a 'God', then you'll have the answer to your question. You'll also realise why that is one of the crappiest analogies imaginable, used by a fundie like you.

And anyway, Sandy, what possible relevance does British attitudes (or our more than justified negative attitudes) towards religion have to do with a shitty so-called 'reality TV' (an oxymoron if ever there was; just as WWE is 'sport', as in a supposed competition like Boxing) programme? When the concept was done already decades ago - and better - in the 1960-70s ("Opportunity Knocks" & "New Faces"), therefore P(l)op Idol/Britain/America's Got (No) Talent can be summed up in this quote:
