[An excerpt of DD explaining the Round Earth conspiracy]

How Does The Conspiracy Benefit?

This is not easily answered, but I've taken some insight into this and made some estimates on how the conspiracy could be making money:

(...)

Display of Power:
Some people are control freaks. Maybe they get a rush from showing that they can change everyone's mind about the true shape of the Earth.

Embarrassment:
So, the government messed up at a really bad time to mess up, and they've been pooling all of the already-angry tax-payers' money into research that eventually led to a less-than-exciting discovery: The Earth is flat. Everyone was wrong. Millions (probably billions) of dollars of money that didn't really belong to them had been basically tossed down the drain for research of the round Earth, when, in fact it was flat.

So, instead of angering people and possibly even sparking a revolt of some sort, they made up some stuff. And you know how lies tend to roll and get bigger and bigger until they're inescapable? I'd say a worldwide conspiracy is that concept...to the max.

Research? Who's researching the Round Earth question these days? Dude, we can see the shit from space now.

I think this site is bogus but I will just say it again, those conspiracy theorist, with their tinfoil hats are the ones to demonstrate it, not us. There are satellite photographs, known routes, star clusters which are only seen in one hemisphere..............a conspiracy is the last thing I expect.

Well, I'm sure that being correct about the shape of the earth is unimportant to you. After all, as 3rd assistant church janitor, you really don't run into many occasions where the shape of the earth really matters, and your intellectual honesty was stomped out years ago.

I love conspiracy theorists.

Clinton gets a blow job, and the whole fucking world finds out.

The Earth is flat, but nobody says a word.

Makes sense to me.

\"Millions (probably billions) of dollars of money that didn't really belong to them had been basically tossed down the drain for research of the round Earth, when, in fact it was flat. \"

With all that money going into round earth research, where do the evolution and global warming conspiracies get their money?

Plus you can take a plane to Japan.

Well duh the earth is flat. Like elephants could carry a fucking globe on their backs! They'd slip right off the turtle!

EDIT:
Oh, shit that was supposed to be a Discworld joke. and then I read the FAQ: \"Q: \"What's underneath the Earth?\" aka \"What's on the bottom?\" aka \"What's on the other side?\"

A: This is unknown. Some believe it to be just rocks, others believe the Earth rests on the back of four elephants and a turtle.\"

If the world is flat then how come I can take a plane to Japan?

Ah a good old flat Earth... Why did they build the Panama canal - wouldn't that just be a shortcut to sailing off the edge of the world?

Billions on dollars doesn't even begin to describe the scale of this conspiracy.

And how come a massive subduction Earthquake off the coast of Washington State on the 26th of January, 1700 caused Tidal waves in Japan?

Can you see the edge of the world across the Bering Strait?

I'm pretty certain that the site is meant to get people thinking about the actual evidence that the world is not flat, instead of accepting that the world is not flat just because people say so.

Wow, it must really be a conspiracy. Apparently, the government keeps wasting millions of dollars on satellites which just fall off the edge of the world. Apparently, we need DD to stop the evil government from wasting money on such endeavors.

@SaneChick: Exactly. I know people who say the same thing about evolution, science in general etc.

A world-wide, multi-generational, decades long secret? How can that sound reasonable?

If the Earth were flat wouldn't it stand to reason that we'd have pictures of the edge by now? Forget satellites and equations, all you'd need is a slow boat and a camera. Or does the Earth continue without bound? In such a case the United Nations will have to become a LOT bigger to represent all the undiscovered nations.

Hard as it is to believe, the Flat-Earth Society are absolutely serious about their beliefs, and have been since their formation in the 1880s (as the Zetetic Society).

These people (or at least some of them) are as far off the nutso scale as Gene \"TimeCube\" Ray and the Vril Society.
