I am studying the crusades right now. From what I can see the catholics were the ones doing all the bad stuff, yet in every book I read they say the christians, when in fact it was the catholics.

And the Catholics were, are, Christians, as far as I am concerned. And by the way, at that time all Christians were Catholics and, later on, the witchhunt relies almost entirely on Protestants.
Catholics believe that Jesus lived, was martyred and ressurected, and is the son of god/is god, and that he and he alone can save wretched human beings from their wicked ways. Ergo, they are fucking Christians .
Fine... Catholics aren't Christians then, happy?
The USA is not Majority Christian then, Christianity is NOT the worlds largest religion, Christianity has only been in existence for the last 600 years or so, and Christianity has no Holy Book. (the Bible is the Catholic Holy Book...)
You don't agree? well, that's the result of Catholics not being Christians, so...
Christianity has only been in existence for the last 600 years or so,
Protestant fundies have warm, fuzzy fantasies about small bands of courageous True Christians meeting in secret, away from the big bad Catholics, and keeping the True Word of God alive.
I hear several different denominations claim that their church has really existed for many centuries.
The only churches I can think of that have any sort of pre-Catholic claims are the Mandeists and the Ethiopian Tewahedo church whose genesis is specifically mentioned in the bible (acts 8:27).
At the very least the Catholic church claims to have an unbroken line of authority reaching back to Christ himself. Can your little protestant church say that?
No? OK, then, shut up.
Catholics are Christians, if you believe that Jesus was the son of God and rose from the dead you are a Christian IMHO.
And, back then Catholicism was the only version of Christianity.
You can't escape the blame by saying they weren't Christian. Sorry.
What else, other than believing in the "sacrifice" of jesus, makes one a christian? Some may say "being an imbecile" but at the heart of every respectable christian there is but one core belief: that jesus died for you. Whether that's true or not is immaterial. And since catholics hold that belief too, it makes them all the more christian. By the same token you might say that Anglicans aren't christians either... and you'd be wrong.
Your nice little brand of Protestantism came from Catholicism, dimwit. They're both branches of Christianity.
... No way. No way people can believe that. Catholics were like, the first really organized Christians!
Protestantism is the stepchild of Catholicism, which claimed the Pauline tradition.
The Gnostics, or those of the Thomasine tradition, need no church or wholly babble, and never did.
Confused?
So were we! You can find all of this, and more, on Fundies Say the Darndest Things!
