no, shit for brains. the catholic church said the world was flat because the bible told it too. science has, since the greeks , known the world was spherical.
who was it anyhow? euclid? pythagoras?

Maybe I just don't know my Bible, but I don't think there's anything in
Isaiah (note the spelling) 14 about Earth's shape. Now, there is something in Isaiah 40:

...which the religious folk of the time took to imply a pancake shape. Only by having the guts to go
against the Church could anyone argue for the spherical theory.

Okay, you know what? The Bible says pi is 3. We'll both measure the circumfrence of a circle, and we'll see who's more accurate.

I had a similar argument with some demented fundie a while back over the meaning of the word 'circle.' Demented Fundie, like Mike here, also took the word circle to mean sphere. Not even a dictionary definition of 'circle' and 'sphere' would convince him that the two are different.

Funny a long time ago a man was reading in the Bible, the book of Isiah Chapter 14, where it says the earth is sphere.
No it does not. Who was this man and how long ago was it?
He then went on to disprove science which stated at that time the world was FLAT!
Science never stated that the world was flat.
Image that, using the Bible to disprove science, now why cant we do that today.
Because, unlike the Bible, science is self-correcting.

Who thought that the world was flat? I remember the ancient greeks (and I'd assume most cultures) figuring out that its a sphere several hundred years before christ.

The Earth was a sphere nearly 500 years before Jesus walked on water.

Even if that one (apparently non-existent) passage was correct, it does nothing to increase the validity of any other assertion in the bible.

Indeed, as Amos points out, Fundie dorks in their grasping for straws, often claim that the circle in Is 40 refers to a spherical earth. In fact, all it really shows is that they failed geometry.
JohnIQR7, please cite the user of the scientific method who claimed the earth was flat.

Sorry, in no part of the Bible it says the Earth is spherical. In fact, during the Middle Ages up to the sixteenth century was, guess what?, FLAT!!!!, and static. Alternative bizarro universe number 5.

That verse calls the Earth a \"circle.\"
now, it's been a long time since prep school geometry for me....but I seen to recall that a \"circle\" and a \"sphere\" are two very different things...

Mike is lying and/or mistaken here on every point -- theology, history, and science. Back to the drawing board, Mike. Try a different crayon next time.

Here's something for MJ: stand on the top of a high point and turn a full 360 degrees. You will see the circle of your world. Something tells me that this is what the villagers responsible for writing Isaiah had in mind.

This shows you how ignorant you are.
People knew the Earth was a sphere long before the Christians did. The Hindus... well, they kinda believed it was half a sphere, but credit goes to them for not believing it's flat.
The Greeks knew it was spherical long before that.
And the Christian monks of olden times knew the Earth was a sphere, not because they read the Bible but because they did an experiment.
One monk went up to the top of a tower in his church and saw he could see further away. From this, he reasoned that the Earth must have been a sphere.
The Bible had nothing to do with it.
The Franciscan friar, Roger Bacon, would be sad to hear your complete claptrap.
