Well, ignoring the fact that he didn't, stories like that almost made sense at the time because they had an extremely limited view of the world, universe and so forth, no clue about history or archaology or geography or science. If they didn't make sense, they were impossible to debunk. And the next thing you know, Paul's gone mad and is trying to include everyone in the club instead of keeping it exclusive, then they've explored most of the world, but are running into the same adsurd scale problems - why would God make 10 billion galaxies in the tiny section of the universe that light has reached us in? Why would God make 100 billion stars in this one? Why would God make 9 (or 8½) planets in this one?
