Well, the function of said cells, Mr. Freak, is markedly different. You know, being that our cells and their differing functions give us sentience, the quality that sets humans apart from all other known forms of life.
You know, I'm sure people would jump on the stem cell research bandwagon in a second if it were animals dying, but we HAAAVE to protect the precious non-aware cells. The animals get it worse than we do, really.

This 'next step' you you have 'evidence' for - forget the evidence, we know there is none, but at the very least tell us what the 'next step' is.
Oh and you're way off with your 'several trillion'. You have about 100 trillion organisms living on and in you at any given point of time. - And while you could argue you consist entirely of shit, you'd still have to scale up with that.
